The Mason Study Club met on Wednesday, February 26th in the Stribling Room of the Library. Lunch was served by the hostesses, Mary Freytag, Trudy Irwin, Kathy Jordan and Deanna Handlin. Two new members were welcomed, Jan McCann and June Hall, pictured. Carol Holmes introduced the guest speaker, Susan Summers, also pictured.

Noon, 2-18-14, I am summoned by my front door bell. “Excuse me, but our rocket seems to have landed on your property. May we have your permission to retrieve it?” Always a pushover for aliens with impeccable manners, I consented, of course. An hour later, their mission accomplished, I learned that their native galaxy was a bit closer than I’d originally thought, namely Eldorado High School, Eldorado, TX.

For the longest time, “round-up time in Texas” meant “headin’ up and movin’ out” cattle. Cowboys atop horses undertook the massive undertaking. They paid special heed to the “young ‘uns”--“little dogies,” if the song lyrics are to be trusted. The Mason Lions club met Tuesday, February 4th, for its monthly business meeting. There were 35 members and two visitors in attendance. Among the visitors were two Mason High School seniors, Price Ruffin and Zac Davidson. "Boss Lion" Fritz Landers was responsible for the program and Secretary/Treasurer Gene Gammill read the minutes and gave the financial report.

Mason Junior High is so proud of our 7th and 8th grade Gifted & Talented students that competed in the Area 15 Robotics Inventions Contest in Robert Lee, Texas. We had ten students from four teams travel to compete in the Inventions Division of the Area 15 Robotics Competition. The goal of the Robotics Inventions division is to create and program a robot to do a specific job or task.

In November a Prime Time group of fourth graders at Mason Elementary began reading The Family Under the Bridge about a homeless family in Paris. This book spurred the students to explore ways to help people in Mason. Pastor Cliff Krcha spoke to the class and explained the available services and needs of our Mason County Food Bank.

Mason Community Kitchen started its third year of operation on January 11, 2014, producing 179 containers of chili blanco for clients of the Mason Food Bank. This local hunger relief organization was grateful to receive a $500 grant from Walmart (via the Brady store) and a $500 gift card from HEB for purchasing ingredients.

If you can remember fender skirts, whitewall tires and flat top haircuts, you might remember that January of 2014 marks Kenneth Durst's 50th anniversary with Mason Feed Store (and Kenneth still has the flat top haircut). In an age where change is normal and expected, it is rare to have the dedication that Kenneth has demonstrated.
