On Monday, May 19th, Mason High School awarded its graduating seniors with the 2008 scholarships, grants and gifts. This portion of graduation has been moved into a separate event than the graduation ceremony in the interest of time. To help those who might be attending Friday night's ceremony better appreciate the achievements of the Class of 2008, we offer the script from the awards assembly.

Mason County Habitat for Humanity is pleased to invite the community to the Dedication Service for the sixth house to be built in Mason! The service will be on Sunday June 1st at 6:30 pm at the new residence at 1203 Loving Street (where it intersects with Gooch Street). The home will be dedicated to partner family Kim Jordan and daughters Samantha and Traci who have committed many hours of sweat equity, working in partnership with the local affiliate, to achieve the dream of homeownership.

This is the 55th consecutive year for the Mason Band Boosters to sponsor the Community Birthday Calendar drive, a project which helps raise money for the band program at school. The Mason Band Boosters Organization has received tremendous support for this project as well as other projects throughout the year. Last year approximately 600 calendars were distributed with over 3000 listings.

This Friday, the seniors of Mason High School, class of 2008, will receive their diplomas. As I've done for a decade, I will be on the sidelines, taking their pictures and capturing the moment. This one will be bittersweet, as this was Lilly Joy's class. As such, the last of "my kids"

On May 19, eight members of the Mason Bluebonnet Study Club met at 9:30 a.m. in the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church parking lot and carpooled to the historic Llano County Courthouse to learn more about the history of our part of Texas. Sarah Franklin, a member of the Courthouse Rededication Committee, served as tour guide as well as providing an oral history of the beautiful old building to the group.

The Dean's List for the 2008 Spring Semester has been announced at Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas. Courtney Eckert of Burnet, Texas recently attended a call for the National American Miss Pageant in San Antonio in April. She has advanced to State competition in Houston where she will be competing for more that $25,000.00 in cash, prizes and scholarships. Courtney is a senior at Burnet High School and will be attending Concordia University in the Fall where she will be studying Biology and running for the Cross Country Team and eventually become an Emergency Room Physician.

David Kruckemeyer, son of Rosemary Kruckemeyer of Mason and a 27 year veteran of the Alington Police Department, was honored recently at the Extra Mile Servant Leader Awards program of the Arlington Alliance for Youth. Appearing on the cover of the June issue of Parents Magazine is Ella Segars, 3, daughter of Michelle and John Segars of Austin. She was chosen from a contest called the "Beautiful Baby Search" with finals for the winning 5 in New York with 3 appearances on the "Live with Regis and Kelly"

Ryan Austin Hausenfluke son of Keith and Veronica Hausenfluke was born on October 18, 2007 in Ft. Worth, TX. Ryan weighed 7lbs, 4 ounces, and was 18.31 inches long. He is welcomed by sister Destiny Michelle and brother Russell Evan. He is the grandson of the late Agustin Orozpe and Amada Orozpe.

The Mason High School class of 1973 will have it’s 35th reunion on July 12th during Round -Up Weekend. It will be held at the home of Warren and Susan Grote with a catered barbeque meal served at 12:30. The cost of the meal will be $8.50. Come on out after the parade at 11:30 and be ready to swap stories of our lives for the past 35 years.

Mia Catherine Reichenau was baptized Sunday, May 18th, at St. Michaels Lutheran Church in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Attending the ceremony from Mason were her grandparents, Del Roy and Lynn Reichenau and great-grandmother, June Brandenberger. Mia was born March 7, 2008, and is the daughter of LT and Mrs. Mac Reichenau and great-grand daughter of James and Mary Catherine Poyner of Mason, the late Hilton Reichenau and the late Horace Brandenberger.

Nick & Holly (Durst) Williams of San Antonio welcomed their first child, daughter Sarah Pamela, on May 15. She weighed 6 pounds, 7 ounces and was 18.5 inches long. Grandparents are Donald Durst and the late Pam Durst of Mason, Kris Williams of San Antonio and Debbie Williams of Houston.

This is the new sterling ‘Lilly Joy’ pendant. It has a hook on the back so wearers can hook it and unhook it on to any beaded design. There is also an earring design that is a small disk with Lilly Joy’s initials on the front and “in memory 2008” on the back.

Founded in 1927, the University of Houston,Texas’ premier metropolitan research and teaching institution, is home to more than 40 research centers and institutes and sponsors more than 300 partnerships with corporate, civic and governmental entities. The College of Optometry is one of the universities thirteen colleges. Established in 1952, the college moved in 1976 to one of the most modern optometric facilities in the country, the J.Davis Armistead Building.

Llano county resident, Jennifer McMillan, is the Mason-Llano Farm Service Agency County Committee Advisor. Ms. McMillan is beginning her first term as advisor to the committee. Jennifer’s knowledge of local ranching and farming practices along with her knowledge of the local real estate markets will be invaluable as an advisor to the committee.

BROWNWOOD – May 2008 – Mason native, Lacey Laqua, received honors at Howard Payne University (HPU). Laqua was named to the President’s List for the spring semester of 2008. Students must earn a 4.0 grade point average to be named to the President’s List, a 3.65-3.99 grade point average to be named to the Dean’s List, and a 3.5-3.64 grade point average to be named to the Honor Roll.

Mason youth have the opportunity to discuss real life issues with their peers and some of the great thinkers of the past and present: Plato, Aristotle, Aldo Leopold, Lady Bird Johnson, Viktor Frankl, Maya Angelou and more. Children and teenagers are no strangers to issues of kindness and unkindness, fairness and unfairness, respect and disrespect.

Carlos Castillo of Mason passed away Thursday, May 22, 2008 at the age of 49. Carlos was born on March 24, 1959 in Mason, Texas to Rafael “Ralph” and Estela Sanchez Castillo. He graduated from Mason High School in 1980 and worked for a time as a janitor at the school.

Lawrence F. Benton of Mason passed away Sunday May 25, 2008 in the Mason Care Center at the age of 92. Mr. Benton is survived by his wife Edna Earl Benton of Mason; three daughters: Tanya Lamoreaux of Mason; Myrtle Bob Keefe and her husband Thomas of North Hollywood, CA; and Elaine Benton Stewart and her husband Dr.

Fred Estes greeted banquet attendees, and Crash Buist gave the welcome address. Paul Rice invited everyone to look at the new plans for the field house which were on view and to attend the first football scrimmage in the Fall.
