Reunioner. That’s a new one. Interesting…but incorrect (so far). The word appeared on a church sign welcoming “reunioners” to a family reunion. Hmm. If this word was correct it would sure change things. All events we attend would automatically identify us. Wedding-er. Funeral-er. Meeting-er. Movie-er. Concert-er. Baby shower-er. Or even more confusing. Attend a play. You become a player. Watch a heavyweight boxer. Makes you a fighter. If you attend school, you’re a s ...

How ‘bout one more holiday story to start off the new year? Or, more correctly, to cap off the old one? It’s a “feel good” piece about three young men who had put in their time at school one day just before dismissal for the holidays. En route home, they talked their mom into an ice cream stop at McDonald’s, near Hulen Mall in Fort Worth. Ron Hoffman, who owns several McDonald’s restaurants in the city, saw them get out of the car.

I have been married to two women — the first one tried for 31 years to change me into her image of what a perfect husband should be — and the second one, bless her heart, even after 36 years is still trying. When it comes to husbands there seems to be no way that a determined woman can be convinced of the truth in that old axiom which says: “You can’t make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear.” But even if you could convince her, there still remains one basic problem.

The world is full of idiots, and America has its fair share, as last week’s column about the 2008 Darwin Awards proves. But the level of lunacy demonstrated by Darwin Award winners pales in comparison with the level displayed by a group of people who have put together a website called ammocoding.com, and a sister site called ammunitionaccountability.org.

It is now a couple of weeks since the new year began and we are all trying to remember to put 2009 on our checks and hoping that we can maintain our resolutions at least until the end of this month. There has only been a little new activity around the city in the past few weeks, but that is starting to change as we begin the projects that were planned in the recent months.

Last week, I received an inquiry about my “Bed & Breakfast.” It was evident that in the request for information they had no clue as to who Jane Zesch was. One of the questions was, “Is it non smoking?” and the other was, “Are there Biking trails in the area?” My reply was, “Smoke’m if you’ve got’m and ABSOLUTELY NO BIKING TRAILS!” I’ve not a reply as of Friday and ten to one, I’ll not have one.

During the holidays, it seems quite a few folks were recipients of new pets as gifts. There were plenty of dogs, a few cats, some fish, a ferret or two and even some hamsters. Dozer was not impressed. Dozer is my soon-to-be two year old Dachshund. He's also the undisputed master of the News office, and he defends his territory with a passion. Until I got Dozer, I had completely forgotten what it was like to have a pet as a constant companion.

Editor: I’m one of those pesky “out-of-towners” who loves living in Mason, but just part time. I do my best to contribute to the community, but recently had to rely on the telephone to conduct 2008 property tax business. Many of you are probably well-acquainted with Mary and Ted at the county tax office.
