You know the old saying: Don’t Squat With Your Spurs On. Good advice. Here’s another version: Watch Where You Squat. Because they’re everywhere. Fire ants. And are they ever. On fire, that is. Anyone who’s encountered them knows what I mean. They move fast as fleas. And are about the same size. The pain they inflict surpasses other bites and stings. Maybe because they bite you first, and then sting. If you just arrived on Planet Earth, North America, United States, Texa ...

The “100 Calorie” snack packs are all the rage right now. Companies are making big bucks because we’re trying to practice portion control! I am all for anything that works. But if you took that package of cookies or chips and measured servings into individual sandwich bags, you could save quite a bit of money.

When things fall into place is really a good feeling. However, when they fall apart, you just have to blame it on someone else. It’s true, “The hurrier I go, the behinder I get.” So, SLOW DOWN! Having a clean house is really nice and you slave yourself to death only to see someone come through with dirty shoes!

The tent the boys and I used on our Rio Grande River trip was given to us several years ago, brand new in the box. It was a lousy tent, its finest attribute that it wasn’t too big. So when Robert, one of the guides taking some Boy Scouts down the river, came over to our camp to visit, I made a trade with him for our tent.

Knowledge by the Stack… Column #310 for Release Saturday, April 4, 2009 Most folks have spent significant time in books, but determination of a consensus favorite after the Holy Bible might be hard to come by. For me, the choice is easy. My parents bought a set of books in 1943, signing on for their first-ever purchase strung out with monthly payments.

Give me a lazy man ****** Yes sir, it’s the truth. I’d hire a lazy man any day over the fellow who will work his fanny off doing every task you give him without ever considering that there might be an easier way of accomplishing those tasks. To answer the question of “why?” I would say, “It is really quite simple.

Joint Pain or arthritis is the number one chronic illness in America. One person in 7 suffers from it. Many people are successfully using glucosamine, chondroitins and MSM to manage pain and to supply building materials for joint repair. While these are very helpful, particularly with osteoarthritis, I would like to mention some other natural remedies for arthritis. Devils Claw and Yucca have both been used traditionally for arthritic and rheumatic conditions.

Big Ol’ Country Biscuits The biscuit recipes I provided a few columns ago seemed to have really rung a few bells out there! I’ve gotten some phone calls and several, in person, favorable comments from folks in the area who tried them and declared them to a new favorite in the household. One question I got was this: I have no self-rising flour; just plain, all purpose flour.

I don't EVER pull pranks, as I HATE having them pulled on me. But, last week's column was an April Fool's prank from beginning to end. So for all of you who have so kindly called, emailed, bought place settings, etc., thanks; but, I'm not getting married. I had no idea so many people had been waiting on me to grow up and behave. What I am still doing is trying to keep your newspaper full of pictures and stories about your lives.

Editor: I want to take a moment to thank all the people who pitched to help on “Free Dump Day”. The response was enormus. It looked as if everyone in the entire county showed up; and with our modest facility, the co-ordination was surperb. The number of trucks and trailers looked overwhelming to me.

Who doesn’t remember the taunt, “You’re chicken!” from childhood? Personally, as a result of that accusation, I found myself stuck in my cousin’s apple tree, trying to ride a horse with a halter rope and no saddle, flying off a large snowbank on a toboggan that I couldn’t steer , and sliding across a parking lot on my stomach after attempting to ride my bike “no hands” around a curve (darn that sand!). Then there’s “playing chicken,” another boneheaded adolescent game i ...
