Last week, the Serenity Springs Salon & Spa celebrated the grand opening of their new location in the former Hofmann Dry Goods building on the north side of the square. The business offers hair care for the whole family, manicures and pedicures, facials and massages. They are open Tuesday to Friday, 9:00 a.m.

During their only regularly scheduled meeting for the month of December, the Mason County Commissioners' Court tackled the tough issue of making ends meet with the EMS department. Commissioner Wayne Hofmann, Judge Pro Tem, presided over the meeting in the absence of Judge Jerry Bearden. EMS Director, Linda Williams, presented a revised fee schedule to the Court based upon rates she had sampled from surrounding counties.

The Mason Fire Department received a check for $ 150 recently from Texas Farm Bureau Insurance Companies as an expression of thanks for the department's work on the property of Groves Ranch. The money will be used for their loss prevention program. The Texas Farm Bureau Insurance Companies pay fire departments this amount when the department works at a fire in rural areas, involving property insured by them. This Friday, December 18th, is the deadline for making your donation to the annual Mason County EMS fundraiser known as "Operation Christmas Greeting". A full-page "Community Greeting Card", with an alphabetical listing of all contributors, will be in this paper’s Christmas edition on December 23rd. The "Greeting’s" goal each year is to provide funds for equipment enhancement.

The Mason Lions Club met Tuesday, Dec. 8th, for its regular weekly luncheon meeting. There were 33 members and 4 visitors in attendance. Among the visitors were 2 Mason High School Seniors, Rachel Collett and Havanna Schmidt. Lion Kirby Groves was responsible for the program and introduced Rio Schmidt who spoke about the history of the "Puncher Dome".

The cool damp weather of last week turned into a great Sunday and has carried over into Monday with clouds. But winter is coming back soon. We had a really great Sunday in Art. The church service began with the choir singing the Christmas special, a great selection titled "All My Heart This Night Rejoices".

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! However, it began to look like Christmas right after Halloween. And right now, I’m hacked off at the retail stores and catalog ordering places that want to wish me a "Happy Holiday!" When they say this I tell them, "MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU,TOO!"

In this holiday season it seems there is always another job to do, or list to complete or place to be for the next get-together. Around the City there has been plenty to keep busy with as well, with the ongoing leaf pickup, dealing with the trash pickup around the extra days off, replacing the light pole that was knocked down on the square, as well as the regular activities like meter reading, fixing water leaks and keeping up with the recycling.

Monday morning was a bit rough. I had gotten home around midnight from four days in Las Vegas with friends, and had to be at the office at 6:45 a.m. on Monday.... It hurt!!!! The Mason Country Opry will be held on Thursday, December 17, at the Odeon Theater in downtown Mason. Admission is $8.00 per person and tickets will be available at the door. Local Country Music entertainer Rhome Hill will headline the monthly show. Hill has been employed by the City of Menard for 34 years.

Operation Orphans, Inc. enjoyed two more weekends of taking less fortunate children deer hunting. On December 5th, 64 boys from eight children's homes hunted on fifteen area ranches and harvested 53 animals. On December 12th, 35 boys from six homes hunted on ten ranches and harvested 24 animals. INGRAM—Auditions for The Point Theatre production of "Almost, Maine" will be held Saturday, Dec.19 at 10 a.m. The comedy, by John Cariani, will run Feb. 12-27 on the indoor stage and will be directed by Chris Huber. Huber will be casting three women and three men to portray multiple characters age 20 and above.

Mercer Boots generously donated a custom pair of handmade ropers to Alpha Beta Psi for their Christmas Affair raffle. Funds raised from this year’s raffle and auction were used to purchase the new Christmas tree for the courthouse lawn and to fund their spring scholarships.

Members of the Mason Bluebonnet Study Club decided to give up their annual dinner-out to celebrate Christmas and instead give the money that would have been spent to The Haven. The group met in Mary Hemphill’s home at 2:00 p.m. on December 7 and shared finger foods provided by each attendee.

The Riata Service Organization held their annual Christmas Party at the home of Joan Whitaker. Joan graciously welcomed the members to her home which was decorated with evergreens, berries and floral arrangements. Each member brought a toy for a needy child, an ornament for the Chinese Auction and a dessert or appetizer. A light hearted evening of fun and fellowship was had by all.

Scott and Linsey (Ziriax) Balmos proudly announce the birth of their son, Ryder Patrick Balmos, born Monday, November 23, 2009, at 10:11 a.m. in North Central Baptist Hospital, San Antonio. He weighed six pounds, 14 ounces and was 19 3/4 inches long. Very proud grandparents are Pat and Lisa Ziriax of Hext, James Balmos of Medina Lake, and Judy and Bobby Everett of San Antonio.

Bluebonnet CASA needs your help! Over the last two months over 10 additional children have been removed and placed into state care. We had our annual Pumpkin Sale in October to raise funds to buy Christmas presents for our children. Although it was a huge success, we are in need of funds or items to be donated to give every child we serve a Christmas!

Charles Lee Williams of Fredonia passed away on Thursday, December 10, 2009, in Fredonia at his home. Charles Lee was born on December 30, 1926, to John Harrison and Zelma Kuykendall Williams in Brady, Texas. A lifetime resident of McCulloch and Mason counties, Charles Lee was a farmer, rancher and a member of the Mason First Baptist Church.

Jon Vater passed away on Friday, December 11, in a San Antonio Hospital, at the age of 62. Jon was born on April 3, 1947, in Mason, to Milton Carl Vater and Louise Johnson Vater. He was raised in Mason and was a graduate of Mason High School and the University of Texas where he majored in Film and English.
