Shayla Estes (at left) has been named to the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches All-Region team. Shayla averaged 9.4 points, 4.6 rebounds, 2.4 steals, 1.5 assists, & 1.2 deflections per game. She was also selected to the All West Texas Basketball Team by the San Angelo Standard-Times, along with her teammate, Lyndsi Clark.

The Texas Topaz Day celebration is well on its way to becoming an annual celebration of faceting in the state. A number of gem faceters will be here-faceters that are famous in our little world. Gary Worden, who with his brother designed the Lone Star cut. Charles Coville, an Austin cutter that has written many faceting books, including one with 200 designs with stars.

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month. The members of the Mason County Child Welfare Board are seeking to raise awareness about child abuse and neglect and to encourage the people of Mason to support children and families. To that end, we have scheduled several activities, such as "Go Blue Day"

There will be a 2010 Census Party, hosted by the Complete Count Committee on April 1, 2010, Thursday, from 10:00-2:00. The party will be in front of the Chamber of Commerce, Super S Food Store, and Hinckleys. There will be free giveaways, i.e. coozies, cups, bags, plastic balls, water bottles, and t-shirts, all commemorating the 2010 Census.

The Mason Lions Club met Tuesday, March 16th, for its regular weekly luncheon meeting. There were 38 members and 3 visitors in attendance. Lion Roger Luckenbach was responsible for the program and introduced Pat Ruiz, Band Director and Dr. Adam Estes, Assistant Band Director of Mason High School Band. Mr. Ruiz introduced four of the band members they brought with them, then each one played a selected piece on their respective instrument.

While attention recently has been focused on the possible CREZ transmission line coming through Mason County, little has been said about an industrial wind farm development that is being considered here. Twelve individuals or families with property in Mason and Menard Counties have signed Memorandums of Wind Energy Lease and Agreement with Mason Mountain Wind Project, LLC, which is affiliated with a California based company, Padoma Wind Power, LLC.

The Mason Tennis Association’s ninth annual Tennis-A-Thon will take place this Sunday, March 28th, at the Mason Tennis Center. The funds raised will be used to improve and maintain our tennis center. The tennis playing youth of our community are taking part in this event by participating in tennis drills, games and competitions for 1 and 1/2 hours, and by obtaining sponsors who pledge money for each participant.

During the March 15 meeting of the Mason City Commission, the group voted to once more offer "free dumping" at the City landfill. The tentative date for the cleanup days will be April 15, 16 and 17. The City of Mason has provided these cleanup days for a number of years in an effort to work with Mason County citizens to help keep the area free of trash and debris.

The 60th annual Easter Pageant will be presented in Junction under the stars at the amphitheater under Lover’s Leap beginning at dark, approximately 8:30 p.m. Saturday, April 3. More than 70 volunteer actors, wearing brightly colored costumes, will portray the story of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The cast and crew are comprised of people from all facets of thecommunity: bankers, nurses, carpenters, and housewives, just to name a few.

Admiral’s tradition revived The Admiral Nimitz Foundation is proud to revive the long-standing tradition of Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz by hosting the Nimitz "Old Texas Roundup BBQ" on Saturday, April 10. First the repairs, then the renovation... When readers saw the headline that Mason County had received a Historic Courthouse Preservation Grant, then saw the digging and construction going on at that facility, they made the assumption that renovation work had begun. Unfortunately, the digging and sawing was necessitated by the 100-year old sewer pipe collapsing, requiring a great deal of work to get those lines repaired and replaced.

12-year-old Shelby Comey of Mason tried out for Johnnie High's Country Music show along with 184 other contestants on January 23rd. The auditions were held in Arlington, Texas, home to Johnnie High's. She just found out last week that she will be performing at the live show on April 10th.

LaVerne Hubbell Vandeveer passed away peacefully on Monday, March 15, 2010, at the Sagebrook Health Center in Cedar Park, Texas. She was 81. LaVerne was born on August 6, 1928, in Menard County to George Eugene and Sarah "Jesse" Haught Hubbell. She was the youngest of five children.
