It is a sure sign of summer in Mason now when the mobile bottling truck pulls into Sandstone Cellars Winery to began bottling the current vintages. People from around the Mason community pitch in to help in the intensive, one-day process, as the wines are pumped from their vats inside the winery, out to the truck, and then bottled, labeled, corked and boxed.

It is hot outside, and most of us try to do our yard work and outside activities in the morning or evening when it is a little cooler. There has been a group in town this week that is out and doing hard work all day in an effort to help some of our citizens that have problems doing their own projects.

Dead wood. It’s a good thing. Makes for good barbecue. Like Texas Deadwood. The name sure fits. And it’s darn good barbecue too. There’s also Coopers BBQ. And Zavala’s on Thursdays. As for dead wood… My neighbor cut down a dead tree. Why not. They’re in the way. Unsightly. No longer wanted. Useless. Not so. Dead wood means life.< ...

In the accompanying photo enjoying the early morning bat return are the Muse family: Christy; Dexter; Marty and David. Also pictured is Mason’s favorite author, Mr. Scott Zesch. These folks proved that the shortage of sleep, the lack of coffee and breakfast, and the 1500 foot hike up the trail are trials that are worth the effort to see this tremendous sight that is offered every third Saturday at The Eckert James River Bat Cave Preserve. I hope that I did not confuse you about ...

Mid-Summer Potpourri… July can be both hazy and crazy, and my Uncle Mort’s 98th birthday party down in the thicket fits both of the rhyming words. Pride-swollen that he used only six of his ten minutes allotted for candle-blowing, he blew the extra time rambling through his "impromptu response." Though a far cry from the "over the top"

This having grandkids 11 and 12 years old really comes in handy. Seeing as how the 12 year old is taller than I am, he can fetch things in the cabinets that I’d have to get me stool to get. Then the my 11 year old does dishes!!!!!! Camp MeMaw is keeping the A&W Root Beer Company in the black.

You have rights. I realize it’s possible that you already knew that, but I think it’s important to state it right up front, for those readers who may happen to be the guy who sent me a rude email message last week telling me I’m a crazy idiot Nazi homophobe Republican idiot (yes, he said idiot twice) for suggesting it’s OK to allow children as young as 14 years old to have access to guns, as long as they are taught proper gun safety procedures first.

The internet and email, while wonderful tools in our world, have also complicated matters. It seems that, for all the information they offer, they also are the root cause of much of the muddying of the water when it comes to discovering the truth about many things. Just this morning, I was checking facebook and saw a back-and-forth discussion about some very personal issues.
