By Paul Rice It was pretty obvious when the state wide Padilla Poll was released this week that the Mason Punchers have everybody’s attention. Our Punchers who started the year at #11 have jumped all the way to #4 as we enter week three of the 2010 season. Our Punchers who have been a top twenty team for the past three years appear to be taking the next step in becoming one of the more recognized Class 1A programs in the state.

How do people from Clearwater, Florida and Huntington and York, Pennsylvania come to have their pictures in the Mason County News? You guessed it, they visited The Eckert James River Bat Cave Preserve last week! Not only did Helen and Richard Sparks from Florida and Rayne McCorkle and her family from Pennsylvania visit to watch the bats emerge for the evening, but Miss Rayne (the cute, young lady in the photo with her family) named one of the bats.

For a hunter there’s the gun. For a chef there’s food. For a musician, an instrument. For a mechanic, a motor. For a teacher there’s the student. For a student, the teacher. For a reader, there are books. For a writer, there are words. Lots and lots of words. Language. As magical as mathematics. And as endless. And that’s just English. Other languages can be equally ...

Life’s Alarming Situations… Details are murky at best about Rome’s big fire in AD 64. Historians, for example, back away from the long-accepted account that Nero fiddled while the city burned. "Fiddles" came along later, so if the emperor chose a recital over the bucket brigade, he was probably plunking a lyre. How e’re it was, be assured that his parents, grandparents and a host of others showed up, hair singed and chariot ...

I didn't get my column in last week, the dictator that runs this paper informed me that they call a deadline in the newspaper business a deadline for a reason... it's a deadline. I just figured that in this new digital age that the above described editor had a big box in his office that he dumped a bunch of emails into, pushed a plastic button and a newspaper fell out the bottom and landed in my mailbox at the front gate.

After a fast shower last week, we now wait to see where this new hurricane goes and how much of a greatly needed rain we are going to get this week. Pray for rain. I missed a few birthdays last week while I was on a vacation trip to Baltimore: Frances Toeppich on the 4th, Scott Zesch on the 5th, Jerald and Vondell Jordan’s twin grandsons, Kaden and Kyler on the 5th, Don Boyd on the 6th, and Cheryl Fritze on the 7th.

Helping Your Children Handle Teasing and Bullying Do you remember the school bully who went around teasing and threatening you or your classmates? Remember how you felt? Remember how you wished he would just go away? Ever wondered what happened to someone who was teased or bullied or what became of the bully himself? Teasing and bullying is an ongoing problem for many of our children.

After reflecting on the last thirty years of "Down The Drain with Jane," I’ve noted a lot of re-prioritizing! I sure spent a whole lot of my time fretting over some of the most stupid stuff! Septic tanks, tight fitting jeans and back to school bankruptcy just doesn’t seem that important now.

A fellow once told me that some people are like Slinkys. They’re not really good for anything, but you just can’t help but smile when you push them down the stairs. The folks at peta are like that. Once in a while I check out peta’s website, to see what total gooberheadedness they’ve come up with lately.

Have you had any quinoa today? How about any amaranth? Bulgur, perhaps? These items have interesting names to say the least, and they could be tasty additions to the whole grain products in your pantry. The Whole Grains Council has designated September as "Whole Grains Month" so why not celebrate by trying a new whole grain? At this point you may be wondering just exactly what a whole grain is.

Cowgirl Bread from "Cowgirl’s Country Life Blog" This is another quick and easy bread recipe that’s worth giving a try. I’ve made it about 3 times, and have experimented with several different aspects of the recipe. As I always do, I remain "true" to the original recipe on the first pass. Then, based upon what I learn from it, I will begin playing games with the original to see if I can produce a better product.

This town of mine still continues to amaze me with every passing day. Just when I think the people here can't surprise me any more, they do things that catch me off guard and make me thankful again for where I live. Last week, I sent out an email asking if anyone had any older PCs that I might be able to pick through in order to replace one of those at the News office that had crashed.

Dear Editor, Thank you for a Wonderful Saturday at the Mason County Apple Fest! At 0630 I had just finished a cup of fresh coffee at the Willow Creek Cafe, and was then heading out to the lease for an hour or so. On my return, I saw folks setting up their tents for the Apple Fest, and they were nice enough to let me lend them a hand fixing a tent or two.

The details of the plan were released to the public 35 years later in 1997 by the John F.

Few Americans will ever forget where they were when they heard the news of the first airplane strike on the Twin Towers on Sept. 11, 2001. In a space of less than two hours, almost three thousand individuals, Americans as well as citizens from more than 90 countries, had died; the Twin Towers had collapsed, the Pentagon was on fire and a group of heroic citizens had brought down the fourth airplane, probably headed for the White House, in a tranquil pasture near Shanksville, PA. This ...

It has been said that water is the essence of life. In Texas, it is the essence of our way of life. The water in our lakes, rivers, and aquifers sustains our families, nourishes our crops and livestock, and powers our industry. A booming population and growing economy mean that many more people and businesses are going to compete for ever-increasing scarce water resources.
