Mason Game Wardens Cody Hatfield and Randall Brown will be offering a hunter education course on October 16 and 17. The two day course will be held from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. both days, and will be conducted in the Courthouse Annex (the old Post Office building on the southwest corner of the sqaure). A hunter education course is mandatory for all hunters born on or after September 2, 1971.

Friends of Jacob Bibb are holding a benefit golf tournament on October 23rd to help raise money to assist Bibb in his battle against leukemia. The Mason Lions Club met Tuesday, September 28th, for its regular weekly luncheon meeting. There were 38 members and 5 visitors in attendance. Among the visitors were 2 Mason High School Seniors, Jenny Smith and Mackenzie Mitchell. Lion Ken Cordero was responsible for the program and he introduced Chris Habecker, High School Principal who spoke about the Blue Ribbon Award that the High School received recently.

With the start of this new month, most of our residents have received your utility bills, and I hope that you are not too alarmed by any increases. As I have said before, most of the increases are in water, sewer and garbage rates and these may be higher because of the rates, but the electricity rates are staying very steady for the past several months.

Cool weather! That is not a complete sentence, but in many ways it speaks volumes. The flowers are happy again and show it by the brilliant blooms that burst forth to face the cool, crisp morning air. Birds happily belt out the current rendition of bird songs. Even the numerous frogs that lazily sit along the sides of the cattle trough seem a little livelier.

Last week, I included an article about a grant/loan that Hill Country Telecommunications received that will allow them to upgrade the high speed internet access to their entire service area. Many folks may have skimmed over it without realizing just how important that item really was. Since I moved back to Mason 15 years ago, the technology options in our little community have grown by leaps and bounds.

The Heart of Texas Chapter of The Daughters of the Republic of Texas will hold its next meeting on Monday, 11 October, in the newly renovated conference room of the Brady Chamber of Commerce located at 101 East First Street. Members of the William Wallace and Sara Jane Taylor Watkins family will be meeting with members of the Charles Wartenbach family during the week of October 8-10, 2010 in Mason, Texas for a first-ever joint reunion of its kind for these two historic families. Through genealogy interests of several of each family’s members, connections began in April of this year.

Mason Tennis Association held their annual tournament, mixer and business meeting this Sunday, the third of October. On August 20, 2010 Bible Baptist Church Youth enjoyed their back to school trip in Austin, Texas. Every year BBC has a back to school event for the faithful youth group, this year the youth traveled to Austins Park and Pizza where the kids enjoyed lots of Pizza, Laser Tag, Race track driving, water boats, Tea cups, Rock climbing, endless video games, and even face painting.

This "mystery" tour group boarded a bus in the Austin area, not knowing exactly where they were headed for the day last Thursday. By 11:00 a.m., they were in Art where Bridget Langdale met them and gave a brief history of the county. They headed to the Square Plate for lunch where Mayor Brent Hinckley and Gerry Gamel welcomed them and wished them well on thier day in Mason.

The VFW Post 8554 at its regular scheduled meeting on Sept. 20 celebrated VFW day. It was a social event with wives and other guest attending. Refreshments were servered. It was a get to know each other event. The new distrist commander of district 13 Commander Daniel Hinijosa was in attendance.

This summer I was diagnosed with diabetes. At first it was hard. But I have got the hang of it. It still hurts me when I take a shot. I take 3-4 shots every day and check my blood sugar 5 times a day. I also take one pill in the morning and one at night.

The 29th Grandparents Thank You Day was celebrated at noon, September 25th at the Mason I.S.D. cafeteria, and it was hosted by the youth of Mason Gospel Church. The them, a day in Hawaii, began with the youth escorting the grandparents into the building. Many of the grandparents were dressed in bright colors and Hawaiian dresses.

The 1969 and 1970 classes from Mason High School had a joint reunion on Saturday, October 2 at Roy Lehmberg’s cabin on the Llano River. The Mason Thrift Store continues to thrive and the profits from its operation are designated by the Board of the Mason Community Foundation for projects that benefit our community. Above is a presentation of a check to the Mason Lion’s Club from those profits to support the 5K – 10K run that was held this past weekend to benefit regular vision related programs as well as directly support several local charitable organizations.

The Mason County Grand Jury met in regular session on September 27, 2010. Two indictments were returned: Justin Carl McGowan, Possession of Controlled Substance, Methamphetamine James Robert McGowan, Possession of Controlled Substance, Methamphetamine An indictment by the Grand Jury is not a conviction or an indicator of guilt or innocence. It means that the Grand Jury felt there was enough compelling evidence to move the case toward trial.

Former Llano ISD bus driver and paraprofessional Jay Lynn Robertson, 56, pleaded guilty during a pre-trial hearing in a Burnet County Court Thursday to two counts of indecency with a child. Robertson faced a maximum of 20 years in prison and a $10,000 fine. As part of the plea agreement he was given a 10-year deferred adjudicated sentence, and will be required to register as a sexual offender for the rest of his life. Oleta Chapman, of Mason, passed away on Tuesday, September 28, at the age of 88. Oleta was born in Menard County on August 17, 1922, to Willie Low and Ruth (Bishop) Low. On November 12, 1942, Oleta married Blanton V. Chapman in Stuart, Florida. At the time of their marriage Blanton was in the Army and stationed in Florida.

Joe G. Ramones, Jr., was born July 22, 1929, and passed away September 28, 2010 at the age of 81. He was surrounded by his loving wife of 32 years, and his loving sister-in-laws. Joe was born in San Antonio, Texas, where he worked and lived. When he retired, he decided to move to Mason where he lived for 19 1/2 years before buying a house in Brady.

Kaboom! That was the sound that would best describe what could be heard in Baird, Texas last Thursday when the 8th Grade Punchers hit the field. The Punchers took on the Cubs from Olney, Texas in Baird last Thurday. When Go Hasanai kicked the opening kick-off to the Cubs 18 yard line, followed by the opening snap and 8 yard sack of the Cub QB, it was pretty much downhill for all the rest of the evening if you were a Olney fan. The Mason JV squad traveled to Baird on Thursday to take on the Cubs from Olney in their final road, non-district game of the year. The Punchers jumped on the board early in the first when Elliot Bibb found Cody Wood in the end-zone for a 21 yard touchdown. The Punchers were able to put another score on the board before the quarter ran out.

The Junior High Football teams hit the road again this past Thursday evening, this time they headed north to take on the Olney Cubs at a midway point in Baird Texas. The Cubs proved to be a worthy opponent with a very large back-field and offensive line. Both teams jockeyed back and forth in the first quarter with no one able to score.
