Medicine. A new four-letter word for the 21st Century. Commonly referred to as "meds." With the same reputation as other four-letter words. Medicine used to be a good thing. Mothers would say: "Take your medicine and you’ll feel all better." And we would. Now medicine makes us sick. It’s too much. It’s too strong. Or just downright wrong. More than 1,000,000 people die every year ...

The past week has been very busy around town with the build up and community involvement for a very hard fought football game, with some of the first Christmas parties of this season, and with the continued changes in the weather and all the complications of winter cold coming. Our city crews are continuing to pick up leaves around town and are making a very systematic route throughout the neighborhoods.

These cool nights are sure reminding me of where I live. I may live in Baltimore but I’m a true Texan at heart! No matter where my travels take me and what lovely sights I see, Texas is the most beautiful place I’ve ever been. Celebrating birthdays this week are Joyce Mutschink on the 9th, Kenneth Kothmann on the 11th, Logan Toone on the 12th and Dakota Dyess on the 13th.

Child Safety Seats- Most Crashes Happen Close to Home Are you one of those parents who takes a short-cut and skips using child safety seats because you are just going around the corner to run a quick errand? The ‘Reddest’ of Faces… Books about famous people flood the market this time of year. We of like minds, even if several floors below the one marked "rocket science," understand the marketing ploy. Folks feel a bit "richer" during Christmas—the season for giving. Why wouldn’t popular literary works hit the shelves about now?

The lights around the square sure do look pretty. However, the banners that adorn all the light post around the square tell me to have a Happy Holliday! Let's get some facts straight, okay? First of all I’m not celebrating a "holiday!" Nor, am I celebrating a winter holiday! I’m celebrating CHRISTMAS! So, if I buy from your store and you wish me a "Happy Holliday!"

Once, about thirty years ago, I fell out of a tree. This tree was about thirty feet tall, a big Live Oak, and I was getting ready for the archery deer season, and I had to clear some limbs out of the way so I’d have a clear shot at a trail where some deer were scheduled to walk by later on.

Last Friday night, I joined a good portion of the residents of Mason County in making the trek to Mustang Stadium in Marble Falls for what turned out to be the final game of the 2010 season. The Punchers played an awesome game that night, and I can't begin to express how very proud all of us in Mason are of these fine young men. I have to admit that the grouch in me starts to get antsy as we move into late November and December and we're still playing football.

If you’ve ever considered placing a conservation easement on your property, make sure you understand everything you need to know before you sign on the dotted line. Conservation easements are not an easement in the traditional sense. Rather, they are better thought of as servitudes, restrictive covenants, or negative restrictions that run in perpetuity with the land.

During the holiday season, "Over the River and Through the Woods to Grandmother’s House We Go" may well be the theme song for many adult children who have "moved away" from the area where their parents still live. Holidays are the traditional time for far-flung relations to reunite and catch up on all things family.
