The 86th annual Mason County Livestock Show will be held on January 7th and 8th. As the oldest single continuous event in Mason County, the livestock show has a rich history of touching the lives of generations of youth in this county. From an event that began on the square in Mason, to the county fairgrounds, to the now present site at the community building, the show has evolved, but still continues to be an important event to so many youth. Over the past years, we have shown many ...

The State Office of Administrative Hearings and the Administrative Law Judge issued their Proposal for Decision last Friday. Their proposal goes to the PUC and the final decision where the transmission line is going to be built will be made in mid January. The ALJ’s recommended the staff’s MK-15 route which is a modified route that parallels I-10 for much of it’s length, but avoids Junction and Kerrville.

Last week I wrote a long article about the Transmission Line issue and decision status, and I appreciate Gerry putting it on the front page so that everyone would have a good idea about the status and steps still to go. This week I can report that the next step has been taken, and I believe that we in Mason can be pleased with the results.

Christmas. Excitement. Anticipation. Going out of town. Or company’s coming. And Santa Claus. Sleigh bells ring, Are you listening? It’s a gearing-up. And a winding-down. All at the same time. Big holiday. End of a year. Wrapping gifts. Stringing lights. Decorating trees. Lighting candles. Saying prayers. Singing carols. Feeling t ...

As I was looking for news article ideas, I came across the Canned Food Alliance’s website- mealtime.org . They had lots of great recipes, and it said that canned fruits and veggies had recently been added to the list of foods moms can buy with WIC monies. While canned foods may be a tiny bit less nutritious than their fresh or frozen counterparts, you don’t have to worry about them spoiling and they do tend to cost less.

Teeth for Christmas… For the world’s half-empty drink glass holders—and they are legion—Philip Pruitt is 50 years deep into a "dad blame it," tough luck, short straw kind of life. He could understandably whimper, "Why me, Lord?" Wailing through all verses of life’s saddest song could well be his refrain. Instead, this non-descript guy with the demeanor of Goober on Mayberry RFD, determination of Winston Churchill and faith of H ...

I was put to the test on saying, "Merry Christmas!" Of all places, I was at the HEB Gas Pump. Pumping in the less expensive grade, when I heard the lady with a German accent, tell the lady paying at the window of the box, "Have a Happy Holiday!" I was right there, so I yelled at the lady in the Box, "SHAME ON YOU —— it’s Merry Christmas!" She was very defensive about my calling her on this.

In case you hadn’t noticed, we have officially arrived at The Last Minute, when many guys look around and realize Christmas has once again not been cancelled, and they’re going to have to go out and buy gifts. And not just any gifts. Thoughtful, personal, heartwarming, individualized, special gifts. Gifts that don’t scream out "I bought this at Home Depot on Christmas Eve from a surly tattooed teenager because that was the only store still open and besides who ever has enou ...

Fat, particularly the kind you eat, has a big effect on blood sugar levels. This translates to the fat around the middle. The wrong kind of fat actually blocks the messages sent to the pancreas to increase insulin production – meaning that blood sugar stays higher than normal. Too much dietary fat also reduces insulin’s effectiveness – again keeping blood sugar levels high.

I'm tired of hearing the arguments. Clerks should say merry Christmas rather than happy holiday! If someone says something other than merry Christmas, it is a slight to our Christian religion! In the words of Ebenezer Scrooge, "Bah! Humbug!" If you've ever worked in any retail environment, or had to deal with the public all day long in a store, office or restaurant, you know that the words that spill out of your mouth by the end of the day start to lack any real enthusiasm or ...

Letter to the Editor: In response to the article titled, "Corner of Grace and Faith." First, let me start by reminding its author that the Church is where the Holy Spirit performs His function of convicting man of his sin, and it is IN the Church, that the person accepts or rejects Christ!

Editor: This time of year with the drought, poor judgement is especially dangerous. My son was welding without a spotter and started a fire in the pasture. Unfortunately, it spread and blew up his truck. He could have lost his life and burned down many homes. Our wonderful Fire Department was able to put out the fire.

Dear Gerry, I wanted to write a belated letter to the editor, congratulating our football team and their coaching staff on a wonderful season that certainly brought pride to Mason. This is our son’s first year playing varsity, and it was very gratifying to see the town rally around our Punchers. He told me that one of the best moments of the season was in our last game, when we were in the final minutes of losing to Goldthwaite, and the stands began chanting "We are Mas ...

We are excited and feel fortunate to have her coming to our guild to share her knowledge with us. Her favorite subject is landscape, and she captures the essence and mood of the moment.

The 8th Grade traveled to Johnson City this past Monday to take on the Eagles. It seems as though the Punchers are on a rollercoaster as of late. Win a game, lose a game, and on this evening the Eagles came out on top 31-28. The Punchers certainly had their chances to take control of the game but there were just too many missed lay-ups and free-throws.
