"We are Garrett Allen, a senior at Mason High School, and Kirsten Allen, a seventh grader at Mason Junior High. We have both been showing since we were in kindergarten. The reason we are writing this letter together is that we work with out sheep together; it's easier that way.

The holidays are behind us, most of the Christmas decorations are put away, we have started a New Year and it is likely that some of the new resolutions are already just a memory. Around the City offices we are busy trying to keep up with the many first of the year issues, and there is plenty to keep us on our toes.

Murphy’s Law Reigns… Show me clergy who’ve seen all Christmas services go smoothly, and I’ll show you folks not yet ankle deep in the ministry ocean. As often as not, troubled waters aren’t even mentioned in the forecast. Veteran clerics, minds filled with memories of rituals and sacraments gone wrong, smile when colleagues new in the cloth brag about precision-like Christmastime programs pulled off without a bobble. Ve ...

HAPPY NEW YEAR! In with the new STUFF and out with the old STUFF. And, personally, no more STUFFING! About this time every year, I’m really tired of Turkey! One can eat just so much turkey. Ham, is another commodity that I’ve had enough of. Who was the person that said, "Eat black-eyed peas on New Years for good luck?"

A couple of weeks ago I got a virus. Not a physical virus, a computer virus. One of those that doesn’t really do any damage, it just irritates you. This one kept popping windows open on my computer, saying things like ‘WARNING! YOUR INFECTED!’ It’s hard to build up any real hate toward a virus like that.

If you are still searching for a great health related New Year’s resolution, consider giving up white flour and products made from it. You might be amazed at how much better you feel. White flour made from refined wheat is one of the most common food allergens today. Almost everybody who lives in the United States has some sensitivity to white flour and / or wheat. Wheat used to be considered the staff of life, but now, thanks to processing, it is a dead and de ...

Oatmeal Raisin Yogurt Muffins Courtesy, Dannon Yogurt I found this recipe on a container of yogurt. It sounded pretty good, so I tried it, and we’ve been very pleased with the resulting muffins. They are tasty, very moist, and reheat beautifully in either the microwave or in a conventional oven. While the recipe suggests using vanilla or strawberry yogurt, I think any of the flavored yogurts will work quite well for you.

It has been a difficult decade for newspapers. Rising costs and falling revenue have provided no breaks for the print media during the last ten years, and newspapers, particularly, have been hard hit. Many people now get their news online, from various sources on the internet. Sadly, a quick glance at the original source material on most of those online stories reveals that they came from the print media.

Gerry, Thanks for putting the photo of the 1939 Mason County Livestock Show in the newspaper last week. You are right about your comments on adults in the photo. Most of the early livestock shows across the nation featured more adults than children and were called "open" shows where adults and youth competed side by side.

Dear Gerry, I would like to share one of the most delightful gifts of my holiday season with the good people of Mason. On New Year's Eve, I opened my door to see Edna Earle Benton standing there. She had a little bag in her hand and gave it to me. In it was Val-O-Milk candy.

Dear Gerry, I received a beautiful poem, "My First Christmas in Heaven" on paper with soft clouds and a beautiful message, at Christmastime. It was SO sweet and I wished that I could thank the person who sent it, but there was no return address. May that person be blessed for caring enough about me to send me such a precious poem.

Brent and Monica Hinckley recently hosted a class reunion in Mason. Those involved were all at the Wesley Foundation, a Methodist student group, around 1975 and became good friends during the "work projects" that they participated in to help the area churches which included roofing, painting, and other repairs. The Mason boys basketball team has jumped out to a great start this year despite being several weeks behind most of the teams they have competed against because of the great football season we had. The season opened with Sonora the Tuesday following the quarterfinal football game and despite having only one practice the team competed well and lost to the Broncos 43-33. The Punchers then headed to Coleman and won their first two games against Cisco 42-26 and Coleman 6 ...
