Food. Not so simple anymore. So many questions surround it. Paper or plastic? Sweet or unsweetened? Medium or rare? Hot tea or iced tea? Spicy or mild? Red or green sauce? With or without cheese? Mayonnaise or mustard? Chips or fries? Regular bun or Texas toast? Small, medium, or large? Is that for here or to go? Smoking or non-smoking? How many in your party? ...

The little shower Saturday morning was a tease, but it was nice to be reminded of the sound of rain on the tin roof. The peach tree in the front yard seems to think it’s spring, and it has started to bloom, now it just needs some more refreshing rain from God.

Children’s Nutrition: 10 tips for picky eaters I’m getting together a program on children’s nutrition for Headstart parents soon, so I thought I’d share some of what I’ve learned... Getting children (particularly toddlers) to eat nutritious foods can be a challenge, to say the least. Parents can buy good foods and prepare healthy meals, but that doesn't mean their children will actually eat. All parents have dealt with t ...

Don’t Blink, You’ll Miss It… When the years begin to stack up and we still have our car keys, cars seem to aim for the side roads. Odds are great that the freeway ahead looks like it did "back there," but get off onto one of the map’s squiggly roads and no telling what you’ll see. As a child, I remember an expression that confounded, and sometimes still does. "There ain’t no other place like this place anywhere ne ...

I’m more of an observer, rather than a participant! I like to watch people. They are really funny. I’m not a socializer! I find most social events are as fake as the plastic poinsettias are at the cemetery! You’ll hear a lot of; "You look so pretty!" Excuse me, some of these social bugs need eye glasses!

For years people have been telling me I needed a blog. At first I thought they were making a joke, since I didn’t know what a blog was, and I thought they were being smart alecks. Actually, at first I thought they were saying ‘glob,’ and I would ask, "Glob of what?"

Herbs are among my favorite remedies. They have been used for centuries as both food and medicine. Herbs tend to be classified by the particular action the herb has in the body. There are herbs that are cleansing, building, nutritive, soothing, calming, stimulating, fever reducing, diuretic, laxative, anti-viral, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, anti-parasitic, and so on. What is fascinating to me about herbs is their multiple properties.

"The kids are excited to be home from school and want to play instead of eat. They may be tired and cranky and want to eat on the couch in front of the T.V. And one child may want to eat and the other doesn’t." If this sounds like a scene in your home, you’re not alone.

In last week's column, I solicited input from the readers about changes or improvements they would like to see in the newspaper. I talked about possibly changing the format of the paper as one of many options; but, had nothing specific in mind. On Friday of last week, we learned that we would be moving from the press we have been using for the last four years.
