Rat. Dead in the trap. That is that. And a giant rat at that. Now barking dogs. Three in the morning. Something’s up. It’s the middle of the night. You tiptoe out on the porch. A surreal world awaits. Nighttime lit by a streetlight. Above, a conglomeration of stars. Nobody around. Neighbors sleeping in dark houses. All is quiet. And there it is. Bigger t ...

I hope you can look out the window after reading this and see rain coming down. If all these percentages for rain would get together, then I think we'd have a good shot at filling the tanks and getting some spring flowers. Celebrating birthdays this week are Kyle Pierce on the 1st (my April Fool nephew!), Lee Jordan and Caleigh Calhoun on the 3rd and Lane Ciomperlik, my great nephew on the 4th.

Upon Further Reinvention… Uncle Mort, staring down the gun barrel at his 99th birthday come July, has been on a tear lately about "reinventing himself." Aunt Maude claims that his history of "inventions and reinventions" covers thousands of adventures and misadventures, mostly brief episodes with the lasting power of 49-cent Roman candles. I use to be a real "Party Animal!" I went to a lot of Tupper Ware Parties. Then there were the Make Up Parties. Never really liked the Jewelry Parties, I’m allergic to nickel in most of them. I like the Pots and Pans Parties. They’d cook you a meal and even clean up the dishes afterwards. However, when anyone had a "Pity Party,"

You may recall that, after the famous Exxon Valdez oil spill, environmentalist groups went to a lot of trouble to rehabilitate some of the critters affected. This effort was undertaken with great expense and, in technical terms, hoopla. People who Really Cared got busy and Did Something to Help The Environment. When two of the most expensively rehabilitated seals were returned to the wild, with a large, admiring crowd present, the television cameras rolled as the seals were unceremon ...

Public disputes are not pretty. Ever. It doesn't matter if it is a couple splitting up after a marriage, a business relationship flying apart, or disagreements between friends, when the disputes are taken public, they take on an ugliness that does not easily fade from memory. Over my 50+ years, I've watched the nature of public disputes evolve.

Editor: The Mason County Sheriff’s Office will not be blackmailed. An individual has been passing out information to the public regarding one of my officers from an incident that allegedly took place some twelve years ago. The deputy was not convicted of any crime. In fact, I went to Eden, Texas where I personally obtained the details on this matter and talked with the current and past Chiefs of Police and they advised me that the officer was "no billed"

Gerry, I am asking people of Mason County to contribute to the Senior Bingo that is held every Tuesday. The gifts don’t have to be large or expensive, however it should be something people could use or enjoy. Bingo is about the only recreation for the Seniors and it is for our pleasure and fellowship. I have talked to Country Home Health and MKM, letting them know that I have asked people to donate.

This is the last call for the 2011 Texas Brigades. Whether you are hearing about the Brigades for the first time, or whether you have previously considered attending a Brigade, now is the time to act. Do not let the chance to participate in a Buckskin Brigade, a Bobwhite Brigade, or a Bass Brigade elude you. Seven years ago my older brother attended the South Texas Bobwhite Brigade when the eye of Hurricane Claudette passed over the 74 Ranch lodges.

Forty players took part in this year’s golf tournament at Comanche Creek Golf Course. Teeing off at 1:30 under overcast conditions, the temperature was just about perfect for golf. The winds stayed relatively calm for most of the tournament but picked up towards the end of the afternoon. It was good to see old friends and to make new ones like Joan O’Donnell and Craig Henrich traveling in from Austin and Zac Langehennig coming to us from Africa.
