The Mason County Republican Women are proud to announce April 16, 2011 as the date of their twenty-fifth annual Home Tour. Anniversaries invoke memories, and event memories bring to mind the people with whom the memories were made. Such is the case of the home of Janet Schmidt which was formerly the home of her mother, Judy Schmidt, an avid supporter of the MCRW Home Tours. When Judy was in her nineties, she continued as a docent on the annual tour.

We are not able to handle any hazardous household waste nor are we disposing of tires, paint, chemicals or batteries for this weekend event, but we can take any of the regular household trash or debris that can normally be disposed of at the landfill.

Pots of geraniums. Pansies by the Courthouse. Flowers everywhere. In front of The Commercial Bank. And Market Square. And Whipperwheel. Pretty new plantings for Spring. Which feels like summer. Ninety-two degrees on April 1st. And that’s no April Fooling either. The truth of it is…it’s hot. Unseasonably. Unbearably. Unbelievably. And dry. Unseasonably.

Double Takes in the News… School superintendents and presidents of public higher education institutions no doubt did double takes—maybe triples—upon learning of Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst’s pronouncement on March 26. Editors re-arranged front page headlines; radio and TV anchors had new lead stories. After all, Dewhurst’s bombshell that no education funding cuts are needed runs counter to Governor Rick Perry’s num ...

March winds blew in the better part of February and have yet to blow on out. And, my records indicated thunder on the first of February and there was no frost on the first of April. Thus, the only indication of Spring is the pecan trees have budded out. I’m not counting on planting a garden.

The peta people never send me anything, and I’m getting sick and tired of it. You’d think, sooner or later, I’d get a letter or something from them, telling me what a horrible person I am, or offering to whack me with a stick, or say bad things about me on their website, or something.

There are days, weeks even, when it seems that the wind never blows. Usually, there's a hot July sun beating down, I'm in a canoe in the middle of the river, and there isn't a breath of wind. And then there's this past week. I know that the folks who have spent any length of time up in the panhandle are accustomed to the wind; but, I'm starting to get a little put out with it.

Dear Editor: Finally, we have had enough!!! The fact that Obama is going to allow Petrobras to produce oil and gas in the Gulf of Mexico when he won’t let American companies produce fossil fuels in the Gulf is beyond comprehension. The oil industry has been providing hundreds of thousands of jobs in the USA since Spindletop blew in at Beaumont in 1901.
