Competing against 15 schools, Mason High captured the District 29-A Academic Spring Meet Championship. When points from all literary academic events and the One Act Play’s 42 points were tallied MHS had 382 points well ahead of second place D’Hanis with 294 points. 60 plus students made contributions to the academic program.

As April 16th approaches, another group of Mason County homeowners are readying for the Twenty-Fifth Annual Home Tour. The MCRW thanks in advance the hosts who will be opening their homes between 10 o’clock and 5 o’clock on Saturday, April 16, 2011.The proceeds are for a scholarship to a 2011 Mason County graduate.

Former students of Texas A&M University will assemble in Brady, Texas, on San Jacinto Day, April 21st for the annual Texas Aggie Muster to honor all Texas Aggies who have passed away within the last year, announced Co-Chairs Terry R. Norman and Terry M. Norman of the 3MC Aggie Club.

After last week’s article on cleansing, I thought it would be a good time to bring up parasites - the thought of which makes most of us queasy. In spite of that, they are an often overlooked cause of certain health problems today. Parasites are actually very common in nature and more common in humans than we would like to think.

The Mason Lions Club met Tuesday, April 5th, for its monthly business meeting. There were 34 members and two visitors in attendance. "Boss" Lion John Gammill was responsible for the program and Secretary/Treasurer Gene Gammill read the minutes and gave the financial report.The timing devices for the 5K/10K Walk-Run were discussed and agreed upon.

In our youth, Z and I were “Rock and Rollers!” However, with age we’ve now become more of the “Rattle and Wobblers!” Gee, the pills we take could almost choke a horse. If it isn’t the prescribed medication, it’s the supplements. Fish Oil, and the likes! So when we walk we rattle and our walking has become more of the wobbling!Now, Z is two years older than myself, so he rattles more than I do.

Our only pet—a three-year-old “mostly Jack Russell terrier”—escaped death row when food and keep were offered at our home back in ’09. She takes me on walks. Mason was blessed with a half an inch of rain last night, and it is cooler today and will stay that way for a few more days, but we are still in a high alert for fire hazard and we will continue to emphasize the need to conserve water. With the dry weather for the last several months, last week the City started our moderate drought response plan and have asked our community to look for ways to conserve water and voluntarily reduce water use.

There is a balance to life. If we ever allow ourselves to become too focused on only one thing, we stop noticing all the other things happening in our lives. After our recent change of printing presses required that we reformat the layout of the paper, we asked you for your input about those changes.Everyone was pleased with only one section, and after we explained the mechanical reasons for moving real estate and classified to the center of the paper, MOST people were satisfied with that change.Without fail, everyone loves the new paper stock, and the effect it has on color photos and black and white text.

Once a year Members of the U.S. House of Representatives have the opportunity to host locally judged art competitions for high school age students within their districts. The Hilda United Methodist Church will be celebrating Palm Sunday with its traditional processional with palms to lay at the foot of the cross, but this year we will also be celebrating with a musical, “Seeds of Joy”, directed by Nanci Gibbons. TEXAS SONGWRITERS IN THE ROUND, had the “best show ever” according to organizers, on March 17th at Sandstone Cellars Winery in Mason Texas. Visitors and Mason folks showed up and celebrated the spring weather and fantastic music. Steve Brooks from Austin Texas performed many of his unique, original songs including one that made it onto a Slaid Cleaves CD.

Castell, Texas (pop. 23) is the home of the Great Castell Kayak Race. The race is held each year on the first Saturday in June. This year’s race is scheduled for June 4th from about 8:30 am until later afternoon. The official start time is 9:00 am; however, racers should be on the water ready to go at least a half hour early.

A large and diverse crowd was on hand at Monday's Mason County Commissioners' Court meeting as County Judge Jerry Bearden signed a proclamation recognizing April 10-16 as National Volunteer Week in Mason County. The Mason County Library was recently the recipient of an award from the Mason Community Foundation that will allow library patrons to start using electronic readers. The library has used the funds to purchase Kindle electronic readers, and patrons can now download electronic books from the library's system, save them to the Kindle, and enjoy them at a later time.

The Mason Tennis Association Tennis-A-Thon fundraiser was a smashing success in raising over $8500. The money will be used to improve our tennis center.About 85 of our tennis playing youth, ages 4 to 18, played tennis for 1 and 1/2 hours on March 20th and acquired sponsors who donated money to them for playing.The top fundraiser for this event was Lexie Bingham, a 5th grader, who raised $1759.

The last Sunday in Lent is Palm Sunday and the beginning of Holy Week. Palm Sunday depicts Christ’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem and his subsequent passion and death. Shayla Estes and Margaret Lemke have been selected to All West Texas team by the San Angelo Standard Times. These two helped lead the Cowgirls to a 26-8 record, championships at the Mason Hill Country Classic and the Eldorado Christmas Tournament, and to the Cowgirls 5th consecutive district championship. The Cowgirls advanced to the third round of the playoffs for the third consecutive year.

The Mason One Act Play has advanced to compete in the Region competition this Saturday. Last Saturday they competed in Area competition in Fredericksburg. The All Star Crew award went to T.J. Schovajsa, Gideon Gonzales won Honary Mention, All Star Cast, and Matt Banner won All Star Cast. Star Longoria won Best Actress.

Raymond Don Bradshaw passed away on Sunday April 10, 2011, in the South Texas Veterans Health Care System in Kerrville, TX at the age of 75. Born to Raymond C. and Lela Mae Bradshaw nee Blasdell in Calf Creek, Texas on April 11, 1935, His family moved to Schulenburg in 1942 and to Houston in 1953 where Don graduated from John Reagan High School.

Laurencio Avalos, of Mason, passed away on Wednesday, April 6, at the age of 91. Mr. Avalos is survived by his sister Simona Valdez, of Mason, a son Laurencio Valdez Jr. of Ohio, a daughter Josephine Gomez of Amarillo, step-daughter Carolina Morquecho and husband Mike of Mason, several grandchildren, nieces and nephews and his long-time care giver and friend Jerry Wright.

The Cowgirl golf season has been a little lonely this year with senior Jenny Smith and sophomore Katherine Koock the only Mason female players. Jenny has been shooting consistently in the low to mid 90’s and Katherine has steadily brought her scores down from 115 to 101. Last week, the District golf tournament was held at the Flying “L” golf course in Bandera.

The Junior High boys traveled to Harper last week to compete in the Longhorn Relays. The field included fifteen teams consisting of 1A and 2A classifications. Several Punchers did well individually and the 8th Grade competed especially well, placing 4th in the completion and scoring 95 points. The Puncher 8th grade weight man relay remains undefeated nailing down an impressive 54.38 time on their 4x100 relay.The following are results of both 7th and 8th grades.
