When he’s invited to be a guest at the Lions Club, Mort eagerly accepts. “Free meal” registers as ear music to my uncle, who has shied away from numerous invitations to join the civic organization. He always gives it some thought, and sometimes fills out application forms. The last page, though, does him in.

Earth friendly is an important concept for our own health and well being. It is something that every household needs to consider for the health of its inhabitants, not to mention the beneficial effects on the earth. While the term “earth friendly” conjures up all kinds of visions of recycling, windmills, solar power and hybrid cars, I like to think about the ordinary products I use in and around my house.According to the EPA, indoor air pollution is one of the nation’s most ...

(see photo) Yep, our dear little lady bat friends at The Eckert James River Bat Cave Preserve. “Appreciated all over the world...prove it,” you might say. I will just pull out the registration form for Saturday night (or if you were one of the guests that joined us that night you wouldn’t have to have the written proof) and on the top line it states: Mat and Jen Browne from Manchester, UK.

Our dog pet family is ethnically diversified! There is Uncle Archie the Bassett, who’s of English descent. Distinguished and stuffy, he is! The two wiener dogs, Earl and Rojo are of German descent. Stubborn and bullheaded. Nacha is of Mexican descent. Being a female is quite a “Yapper!” Then we have Cousin Louie who’s a, well let's say Louie is of REDNECK descent.

I was pleased to have one of my 4-H leaders suggest this article in wake of the terrible recent tornados. There is a great Extension publication that you can download on the subject at http://texashelp.tamu.edu/002-protect/PreparingfortheunexpectedBook.pdf. This is a quick summary, with my own thoughts thrown in…First of all, make sure your family has a plan about where you would meet if a disaster occurs and you lost phone service.

During the past few weeks we have had several incidents that have required prompt response from our City crews, and I can proudly report that they have met every challenge. Three weeks ago there was the unfortunate accident when a truck ran into Commercial Bank and created a hazard to the bank employees as well as the public at the northwest corner of the square.

Every summer my family would load up our van and embark on an 18-hour car ride from Texas to Michigan. Certain snacks were a must: donuts, trail mix, M&Ms, licorice and let’s not forget stops at fast food restaurants. But what if you don’t want to lose the swimsuit body you have work so hard to achieve in a single road trip.

There seems to be a lot of strange news happening lately, for some reason. Maybe it’s the economy, or the threat of global warming, or that British chap getting married recently. Or maybe it’s something else, but people seem to be doing weird things nowadays. For example, the world’s tallest couple was crowned in Hollywood recently.

OK, folks, this recipe isn’t quite a “practical” type of recipe, because it’s a fairly involved process to produce these bagels. But, if you love bagels, you’ll make the sacrifice and spend the time to knead and then to boil these lovely things. Believe me, you will feel that it is time well spent!Ingredients:2 teaspoons dry yeast1 ½ tablespoons sugar1 ¼ cups water3 ¼ cups bread flour, plus extra for kneading1 ½ teaspoon saltProcess:S ...

Growing up, I was a fan of Popular Mechanics. While the magazine gave great hints about how to repair or fix any number of things, I especially enjoyed their glimpses at the future of technology.Brightly illustrated, thoughtfully researched, optimistically slanted. The articles postulated on the many great gadgets awaiting us in the near future.
