Mason , TX—Mason County Extension of the Texas AgriLife Extension, is proud to announce the Friend to Friend: Staying Well Together program on Wednesday, July 20 at 5:30pm at First United Methodist Church fellowship hall in Mason. This free bilingual program’s purpose is to encourage women to get regular mammograms and Pap tests for the early detection of breast and cervical cancer, when the disease is most curable.

Hill Country Telecommunications, the technology and communications leader in the Texas Hill Country, announces the deployment of its Motorola fixed wireless broadband network into the Mason, Texas market. This new network will allow a broader base of residential and business customers to take extended advantage of Hill Country’s all fiber broadband Internet access network that was completed in 2010.

With legitimate claims for nimbleness and quickness, they’d both be miserable failures on Jack’s final test—jumping over the candlestick. If they tried, they’d fail, leaving the candlestick “unwobbled.” They have much in common, these two Brown County natives. Both were born at home—a dozen miles apart—and both excelled in country schools.

“NEVER SAY-NEVER!” If you do, you might eat your words. Take Z! Sometimes you can “TAKE Z!” He was said after the bag mobile phones, that he’d NEVER have a cell phone. His fingers were too big for those little numbers. When I was in my 4-wheeler chair, I asked him to carry my PINK cell phone.

I suspect you are tired of me writing about water issues in Mason, and I am certainly tired of having to emphasize that point, but this week I have some good news and can answer some questions we are getting asked frequently. We have been talking about water conservation since April here in Mason, and we are seeing some payoff even with the continuing heat and dry weather.

Sustainability in health care – As I listen to customers day in and day out, I wonder how our current health care system can sustain itself. How did we ever get away from being able to afford medical care? Why do we need insurance companies in the middle? I know people whose treatment is beyond what their insurance will pay – but why does it cost so much?

The Mason Lions Club met Tuesday, July 12th, for its regular weekly luncheon meeting. There were 40 members and one visitor in attendance. Back on June 28th, we had a celebration for Terri Reardon's 40th birthday. We had a "family" dinner, and Ken, Peanut and I went in together to pick her out a spa package from Kim Nail to give her a special day all her own, with all the special touches to show her our love and appreciation.

Hunter Education provides instruction on Texas hunting regulations, wildlife management and identification, conservation ethics, firearm and hunting safety and responsibility, and outdoor skills. This course is particularly suited to novice or young hunters. The Mason County Habitat for Humanity affiliate has just been awarded the first Energy Star certificate from the Habitat in house HERS rating program. Michael Lopez, Sustainable Building Specialist, has been working with the affiliate since last year and is happy to report that their HERS Index came in at 64.

Donald Vincent (“Jennie”) Hammond, 92, passed away peacefully Thursday, July 7, 2011. Jennie was born on September 16, 1918, in Burnet to Eva (Darby) and Fielding Hammond. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Darby and “Mac”.Hammond is a descendant of one of the pioneer families of Burnet County.

Harvey W. Zombro, Sr., of Mason, passed away on Tuesday, July 12, at the age of 83. Harvey was born April 19, 1928, in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, to Lacy W. Zombro and Joyce Small Zombro. He was raised in Pennsylvania and enlisted in the Army during World War II. In November of 1967 he married Helen Riddle and they were together for 32 years.

Any 7-12th grade boy or girl that is in need of a physical for the 2011-2012 school year may do so again on July 21st at 2:30 p.m. in the fieldhouse. Dr. Cone will once again be providing these physicals for $5. All incoming 7th/9th/11th boys and girls must have completed a physical prior to participation in practices or contests.

This past Monday Jerry Burleson held a golf clinic for the Mason Ladies’ Golf Association. It was enjoyed by all and we appreciate his time and helpful information. Next Monday, July 25th, at 8 a.m. he will be giving another clinic at the driving range at Comanche Creek Golf Course.

The West Texas Junior Champions Tournament was held at Comanche Creek Golf Course this past Saturday with 40 golfers competing from the ages of 6 through 18. Golfers from as far as Snyder competed in the tournament and Directors were well pleased with the turn out for the first WTJCT tournament held in Mason.
