No one ever asked the little old man about his scruffy scarf. Oh, it was noticed, usually by uppity passers-by. They’d giggle about its unquestioned homemade construction, guessing it may have been plucked by someone with limited vision from the 25-cent barrel at the thrift store. Why, one could reasonably wonder, would anyone wear a frayed green and gold scarf, accented by dozens of worm appliques? That’s what the 95-year-old Baylor grad wore to the stadium on December 2—the ...

Cold, dreary weather and flu season have a lot in common. I recommend building immunity during this time.My first tip during weather like this is up your intake of vitamin D. It always seems like the worst cold and flu bugs circulate around the school after one of these spells.Build your immune system by taking extra vitamin C, zinc (if you tend to be deficient) and something that keeps viruses from taking over the body – I recommend a very high quality olive leaf, elderberry or a grap ...

It’s beginning to look like Christmas! Or is it? As a child, Christmas just happened. I had no idea what it takes to do all the Christmas stuff. Santa did all the work back then.Ok, being an adult has some advantages, however, the child has it made.First and foremost before all the parties and gifts there is FOOTBALL.

Just in case anyone is wondering, the town of Turkey, Texas did not change its name to Tofurky just to get a free vegetable meal from the space cadets at peta. Most of the people who live in Turkey probably ate turkey for Thanksgiving. And I hope that steams peta’s spinach, because they’ve got me pretty steamed, again, over their stamps. My friend, Patrick Wentworth, sent me some stuff about peta recently, and one things he sent was a story from the Huffington Post, which is a new ...

Over the holidays, my son-in-law brought a six pack of Shiner’s Holiday Cheer seasonal beer. Neither Sheila nor I drink very much beer, so we didn’t taste it. When they opened a bottle of it, it had a very interesting smell: peaches and pecans! Paul left a couple of bottles with us when he and the family returned to Ft.

For months now, I've tried to remain dispassionate and unbiased while watching the 2011 Mason Punchers. Obviously, I've been supportive, I've been enthusiastic, and I've been there all along the way. However, I tried to never let myself look further than the next opponent. I tried to focus only on the next immediate goal.

Dear Gerry - I agree with last week's letter writer about the "Happy Holidays" signs, but she is mistaken about "Xmas." "Xmas" is simply a legitimate, shortened form of the term "Christmas." It is NOT a disrespectful abbreviation. "X" is the Greek symbol for "Christ" (the letter "chi" from the Greek alphabet) and the initial for "Christos"

My wife and I had the privilege of having two wounded American Servicemen sponsored by the Wounded Warrior Project deer hunt with us at Granite Oaks Ranch. One was from Texas and there was no charge for his hunting license. The other was from Louisiana and because his disability was 50% and did not meet the requirement of the Texas bureaucracy of a 60% disability he had to pay the full non-resident fee of $315.00.Are we nuts?
