The 87th Mason County Livestock Show will be held January 6 & 7, 2012. Beginning on Friday at 9:00 a.m. the county show begins with Market Lambs, followed by Angora Goats and then Meat Goats. On Saturday, the Market Hog show begins at 8:00 with the Market Steers following at 11:00.

It has been a great year of success for our wounded Warrior program here in Mason County, and we want to make sure we end it as only you people in Mason County can end it.This Friday, at high noon, at Eckert Civic Center, we’re hosting around thirty-five warriors from Brooke Army Medical Center, the Paralyzed American Veterans, and Fort Hood’s Warrior Transition Brigade.

Do you have a freezer full of game meat like venison, duck, quail, dove and boar? Because hunting is such a popular sport in Texas, many of us are accustomed to eating these meats. And with all the choices available, there is no getting bored with the same old beef and chicken.

Ranges for blood chemistry are good indicators of our health. Regular blood work is beneficial in that it is a good screen for diseases and it records health markers at given times so that a history is established. Blood work can also help indicate nutritional and functional status. I like to use blood work preventively.

2012 has arrived! No resolutions, due to the fact that every time I make one, I break it. So, no fear of defeat this year for me. I did stay up until midnight to bring the new years in. That is something that I haven’t done in years. However, if Dick Clark can do it, I figured I could, too!I’ve always wondered how Father Time looks so old after only one year.

I hope that everyone had a very enjoyable holiday season and that each of you is ready to start fresh with this new year. The past several weeks have been very full of special activities beginning with a very busy Thanksgiving weekend, continuing with football playoffs until our Puncher team brought home the State Championship trophy, and finally coming to a blessed Christmas weekend and a joyful welcome to the New Year.

As an acknowledgment of the absolutely super season our Punchers turned in I thought I’d whip up a commemorative bread. I think you’ll like it! The Fredericksburg Rockhounds open their doors to the public at the Hill Country Gem & Mineral Show on Saturday and Sunday, January 21 and 22. Floyd Ralph Johnson of Mason was born on June 25, 1935, and went to be with the Lord on December 28, 2011 at the age of 76.He is survived by his twin brother, Royce C. Johnson and wife Carolyn of Dallas; sister, Dorothy Tatsch of Mason; and, sister-in-law, Eulene Johnson of Mason.As a young boy, Floyd was always a hard worker.

George Eldon Cotton, age 77 of Smithville Arkansas died Friday, December 30, 2011, at his home. He was born September 25, 1934 at Alex, Oklahoma to C.J. and Vina Weston Cotton. He worked in the oil fields of New Mexico until he became a pastor in 1971. He pastored three churches in Texas and then retired due to health reasons and moved to Smithville in 1980 where he worked at the Democrat Gazette as a bundle hauler for 12 years.He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister Roxie Qualls ...

Jeanette Earlene Hegar, 68, recently of Cheraw, Colorado, and formerly of Mason, Texas, died suddenly due to stroke on December 13, 2011, in Pueblo, Colorado.She was born September 19, 1943, in Houston, Texas, to her parents, Jess E. and Rose Marie Schultz Ward.She worked several years at Super S Foods in Mason as a bookkeeper.She is survived by two children: Louis E.
