Last Friday, the Mason County Chamber of Commerce held an official ribbon cutting for The Yellow Rose Barbershop. It is located in the "Yellow Rose Apartments" building at 449-B Ft. McKavitt St. The owner is Douglas Cash Fransen who has been in business from 1978, and he comes from a long line of barbers.

After the successful Lunch ‘N Learn program, “How You Debrief Grief”, many requested a grief support group. Aloe Vera Aloe vera is a wonderful healing herb that is part of the lily family even though most people think it is a cactus. It has been used for centuries and was even found in Egyptian tombs.Aloe is known as a contact healer. It is very useful on burns. It is one of my favorite remedies for almost any digestive issue from ulcers to diarrhea.

It really is good to be back on the interstate. After twenty-two days broken down, I’m really having fun. I’ve had dial up interstate for over seven years. I never knew just how fast other service could be. Think I need a “SLOW DOWN/YIELD” button. Z said I need a “Granny” button!

The Mason Lions club met Tuesday, January 31st, for its regular weekly luncheon meeting. There were 34 members and three visitors in attendance. Lion Brent Hinckley was responsible for the program and talked about his coin collection.Brent spoke mainly about old coins and coins that are no longer in use.

Kerrville ISD honored Mason “boy” Ron Chew on Monday, January 30th, for his 37 years of service to the district. Ron serves as the Director of Special Education and has a long tenure with KISD. Ron's wife, Suzann Schreiber, is also a former resident of Mason. Ron graduated from Mason High School in 1966.

The Area Agency on Aging (AAA) of the Concho Valley Council of Governments will be visiting Robert Lee to provide information about benefits that may be available for Medicare recipients and/or 60 years of age or older persons. I will be available to assist with the application process for Food Stamps, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Chip and Medicaid and have general information available regarding state benefits.

The 2012 year has really started out with a bang for the 4-H and FFA members of Mason County that show livestock. The District livestock show was held in Kerrville from January 19th through the 21st. The market animals all showed on the 20th. Eleven youth participated in the market lamb and goat show, exhibiting 25 animals.

On February 1, at the Mason Eckert Civic Center, Debbie Geistweidt entertained members and guests of the Fine Arts Association of the Hill Country by showing them how to make Valentine cards using fiber art techniques. This was a very creative program. Working with a variety of colorful materials including ribbons, thread, fabrics, buttons, lace and glitter participants made unique designs for framing or mounting on card stock.

After retiring and moving here in 2007, my first load of feeder calves was brought in by J Livestock. The calves had already been vaccinated, cut and tagged, which meant, a lot less work for me. They suggested I feed and keep the calves in the pen for about 3 days.

Allen Eckert tied for the Second Place Championship at the Temple Winter Chess Tournament. The tournament was held on January 28th.Allen won two games and tied one game, being one of three players to go undefeated in the Open Section. Competing with Allen at the tournament were players from Austin, College Station, Copperas Cove, Georgetown, Killeen, Kosse, Temple and Waco.

Two local artists, Robin E. Clark and Dorrett Townsend, have had works accepted for the 14th Annual Stars of Texas Juried Art Exhibit in Brownwood. Their works are two of the 130 pieces selected for the show from a pool of 376 entries. Both artists are charter members of the Fine Arts Association of the Hill Country, a four county organization based in Mason.Clark’s highly abstracted digital collage, “Road Trip,” received one of 15 cash awards.

Hill Country Memorial now ranks in the top 10 percent of the nation’s hospitals.In a March 2007 press release, Debbie Wallace-Dooley, Hill Country Memorial’s Chief Strategy Officer, stated that, “Our goal is to be in the top 10 percent of this nation’s hospitals.” Add three years and a lot of hard work and the hospital has done just that.

On Wednesday, August 31, 2011, the Mason County Clerk's office began the processing of brand renewals.The recording fee is $15 per brand, per location. Please understand that more than one person can have the same brand, just not in the same location. In the state of Texas, all brands have to be registered every 10 years.

The City of Mason will be holding a City Officials Election, Saturday, May 12, 2012. City positions up for election this year are Mayor At-Large, City Commission District 1 and City Commission District 3. Residents of the City of Mason who desire to place their name on the ballot for one of these positions may do so beginning February 4, 2012 until March 5, 2012.

Mason, Texas —Capital Farm Credit Board of Directors recently declared a total patronage refund of $126.6 million. $38.4 million is to be paid as cash to stockholders in March and $88.2 million in the form of allocated equities, eligible for future cash payouts. The refund, based on 2011 earnings, continues a long-standing tradition by the rural lending cooperative of sharing earnings with its customers.

Ismael M. Duarte, “aka Smiley”, went to rest with the Lord on February 1, 2012, at the age of 77. Smiley was born on January 28, 1935, in Eden, TX to Ignacio and Virginia Duarte. He was the youngest of two brothers and five sisters. His mom died when he was five years old and his dad remarried Agustina Soto Duarte.

Erlene Butler Airheart, 81, a lifetime resident of Llano, Texas passed away Wednesday, February 01, 2012. Patricia Ann Wolfshohl, 70, of Fulton passed away at University Hospital on February 5, 2012. She was born in San Antonio, TX, the daughter of the late Frank Camp and the late Hilda (Novotny) Camp. On June 10, 1967she was united in marriage to Clarence Wolfshohl, who survives her passing.
