The Annual Mason County Chamber of Commerce Civic Awards Banquet is upon us!! Thank you all for your wonderful contribution to the nomination and voting process, I believe everyone will be very pleased with our winners this year, they ALL deserve it for sure! All awards will be presented at the banquet on Thursday, February 23rd at the Mason High School Cafeteria at 6:00 PM- 8:00pm.

During a marathon four and a half hour meeting on February 13, the Mason County Commissioners' Court began the careful process of determining exactly what repairs would be available using the proceeds of the recent Texas Historical Commission Courthouse Restoration Grant. After securing the District Championship and earning a bye the first round of the playoffs, the Cowgirls traveled to San Antonio Cole High School to play the Woodsboro Lady Eagles in the Area round. They started off the first two minutes of the game on a 10-0 run and never looked back.

He arrived on campus “ready to roll,” despite never owning a vehicle in college. He had as many ideas daily as some folks do in a lifetime, some of ‘em good. He made friends readily, but enjoyed his “puzzlement” status with many.Admired and respected by faculty and fellow students, he never lacked transportation.

Just the basics of nutrition are a concern to many. I find that some very basic nutritional supplements help almost everybody.A good multivitamin is the first basic. The Mason Lions club met Tuesday, February 14th, for its regular weekly luncheon meeting. There were 29 members and four visitors in attendance. I've just went through a week of enduring the "crud" that seems to have been going around town. After spending several days downing Mucinex, drinking water and coughing my lungs up, I was in less than a cheery mood on Tuesday morning.But, I was feeling better than I had in almost a week!

By now you’ve heard of blood diamonds- diamonds mined by force to support civil war in Africa. Gold is being mined by small children in west Africa for almost no pay for the kids. Miners in Myanmar get almost nothing for the rubies they find in rivers. Mining has always been a hard way to make a living, and often for very little pay.

Dear Gerry, Remember not too long ago when Mason had one of its letters-to-the-editor skirmishes centering around the Republican Ladies’ sponsoring a talk by the author of a book about the imminent imposition of Sharia law upon America? The liberal letter-writers thought the RL’s and the author were fear-mongering, rabble-rousing around a wedge issue and ignoring more realistic concerns.

The 2012 Mason County Critter Getter Benefit Predator Calling Contest has been scheduled for February 25th and 26th. Our new state assessment system STAAR will take the place of TAKS this spring. This brings about many changes for our elementary students. STAAR is a more rigorous testing program. Please join us for an informational meeting regarding the upcoming testing for your child. Parents will be given information about the writing, reading, and math STAAR tests.

Make space in your bookcase and donate your gently used books!The Friends of the Library will hold its annual Book and Bake Sale March 30th and 31st, and April 2nd -4th in the Stribling Room at the Mason County Library. The goal for this year is to immediately replace the $5,000 lost from state funding in order to buy new books.

Are you curious about aromatherapy? Our volunteer instructor, Vessel, will talk on some of the uses of aromatherapy throughout history as an alternative or complementary healing art. Her non-medical discussion will cover how essential oils are different from fragrance oils and the role that carrier oils play in aromatherapy. She will be aided with supplies from the Peach Basket Natural Foods and Supplements in Fredericksburg.

Tennis players visiting from out of town last week were disappointed when rain caused the cancellation of their tournament; but, were given a special treat when The Odeon Theater opened up for a special movie showing, just for them. The kids and their sponsors got a movie, a drink and popcorn, all for just $5, and took home great Mason memories.

A sophomore from Mason High School will attend the GOLD (Giving Opportunities for Leadership Development) Youth Leadership Program in San Antonio May 31st through June 3rd, 2012. The student delegate selected to attend the program this year is Damian Del Toro.More than 120 exceptional sophomores, each representing a different high school, will attend.

Taylor Garrett, who is a Border Patrol Agent assigned to the Tucson, AZ area, was recently able to come home to Texas for a brief visit. He visited with Oma & Opa (Florence and Danny Smith) a couple of days and with his Mom, Dad (Karen and Phil Chapman), family, and friends before returning to Tucson.Kodiak Finn McLaughlin, born January 21, 2012, weighed two pounds, six ounces, and was sixteen inches long.

Some Mason High School students participated in a Book Nook Seminar at Mason High School conducted by representatives from Barnes and Nobles, located in Bee Caves, TX, on Monday morning, February 13.The representatives, Joe and Penny, explained the features of the Nook, which includes the downloading of at least two million books.

This is a reminder that Mason Community Foundation grant applications are due March 1st, which is next Thursday. Forms are available at the Community Thrift Store, Mon-Fri from 9:30-4 p.m. They may be returned to the Community Thrift Store, or to Hinckley’s Country Store. The Community Thrift store is operated under the direction of the Mason Community Foundation (MCF), which was formed 5 years ago.

Laverne Lee, of Mason, passed away on Monday, February 13, 2012, at the age of 83. She was born on March 2, 1928, in Mason to Roy Capps and Ella Hasse Capps. She graduated from Mason High School in 1945 and received her B.A. from Texas Christian University in 1948.

The angels rejoiced as they welcomed another saint home. On Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2012, our deeply loved wife, mother, sister and beautiful child of God left this life to enter the gates of heaven to be with our heavenly father after a valiant but short battle with cancer. Jackie Roddie, 74, of Fredonia, died Sunday, February 19, 2012, at his residence. Jamie Kathryn Roberts went to be with the Lord on February 16, 2012, at the age of 70 after a brave battle with cancer. She passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends. She was born in Mason County, Texas on September 10, 1941, to James and Geneva Bishop and was a lifetime resident of San Antonio.

Marguerite Louise Klingelhoefer Keller was born on July 24, 1920, In Cherry Springs, Texas, the daughter of Alfred and Matilda (Tillie) Marshall Klingelhoefer. She passed away on Thursday, February 16, 2012, at the age of 91 years. She was baptized on March 9, 1921, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Fredericksburg.

Molly Mooney passed away Feb. 13, 2012 at home, in Fredericksburg, Texas surrounded by her loving Family.Molly Burgess Mooney was born July 13, 1948, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, to Henry and Mary H. Burgess. She moved to Wyoming as an infant and grew up on a ranch east of Sheridan.

The Cowgirls took First place honors at the Mason Invitational Golf Tournament last Wednesday shooting 462. Katherine Koock tied P. Savarino form Blanco with a nice round of 106. Katie Smith placed 4th, Jackie Drazan 7th, Lorri Ann Drazan 8th, Shelby Breckenridge 10th and Michaela Martinez placed 12th. The Punchers placed second with a score of 394 and fifth with a score of 464.

The Mason Tennis Association’s 11th annual Tennis-A-Thon will take place on the afternoon of Sunday, March 25th, at the Mason Tennis Center. This fundraiser helps improve our tennis center. The tennis playing youth of our community are taking part in this event by participating in tennis drills, games and competitions for 1 1/2 hours on March 25th, and by obtaining sponsors who pledge a certain amount of money for each minute the participant’s team plays tennis.
