On February 21st, 22nd, and 23rd the Ag Mechanics Team from Mason FFA placed second overall in the annual San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo Outdoor Cooking Tow-able division competition with their entry of a multi-purpose bar-b-que pit and trailer. In mid-February, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) contacted Mason County and the City of Mason, notifying both parties that the agency was considering the creation of a watermaster for the Colorado River Basin. According to documents sent with TCEQ's letter, a watermaster is responsible for monitoring water levels and flows, and water use within the basin.

For those of you in the yoga class or on the waiting list, we have moved the Tuesday class to Monday. The time is still 8:15-9:15 A.M. We had a great week last week not just because yoga is so great but especially because we received a $1,000 award from the Pedernales Electric Coop’s Light the Way grant program.

I don’t think we had Spring Break, when I was in school. We had Thanksgiving, Christmas off, New Years, Stock Show, Good Friday. Spring Break and having two grandsons come is good.In fact it is better to be a grandparent during Spring Break, than it is to be a parent!

The Mason Lions club met Tuesday, March 6th, for its monthly business meeting. There were 31 members and no visitors in attendance. "Boss" Lion, Kirby Groves, was responsible for the program and Secretary/Treasurer Gene Gammill read the minutes and gave the financial report.Lion Fritz Landers gave a talk about the battle of the Alamo.

This recipe started out as a buttermilk biscuit recipe. The biscuits turned out so well I thought I’d see if there were other variations out there to try, and sure enough, this recipe popped up. I am confused. So very confused by our state government, with its Republican majority, working with all its might on women’s health issues. There is obviously no empathy in our legislature. They can’t have a clue as to how this will affect their constituents. This last year they have made getting an abortion much more difficult.

The Mason Garden Club will hold their regular meeting on Tuesday, March 20, 2012, at 2 p.m. at The Green House, 605 San Antonio Street. The Odeon Preservation Association in Mason isn’t missing a beat after a great fall line-up and is picking up with its concert season announcing the line up for spring and summer. This Saturday March 17 Texas jazz great Kellye Gray will make a stop in Mason while on her way to the west coast where she will perform and act as guest instructor at the Jazz School in Berkley.

The Mason County M. Beven Eckert Library has received eighty-nine new children’s and junior books from the Libri Foundation. The Friends of the Library supplied the matching funds, and the library was notified in September that it would receive the books. Rosemary Davis, one of the library’s storytellers, will select some of the books to use for a special Story Time at the Little Punchers.

The Pedernales Electric Coop held their annual Light the Way awards reception in Junction on March 6. Light the Way is a grant program that gives a one-time award to area Chambers of Commerce, volunteer fire departments, EMTs, libraries, and senior centers. The Mason Co. M. Gerald Patrick Tallent was born on November 12, 1921, to Ruben and Mary (Wunsch) Tallent in Dallas, Texas. He passed away March 4, 2012, in Austin, Texas, at the age of 90. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister (Margaret Wiggins) and his wife of 54 years, Helen Sell Tallent.Gerald grew up in Dallas and the Falls County farming community.

Leon Presley Smith, age 66 passed away peacefully at his home in Brady, Texas March 10, 2012, after a long battle with cancer. Leon was born July 28, 1945, in Lamesa Texas, to Edward Presley and Lilly Eunice (Mills) Smith. Leon was a long time resident of Mason but moved to Brady 15 years ago.

Anna Grace Kidd Durst (Mrs. Clinton Durst) passed away on Friday, March 9, 2012, in Fredericksburg, Texas, at the age of 83 years following a lengthy illness. She was born in Brady, Texas on January 3, 1929, and grew up in the Katemcy Community. In 1946 she graduated from Mason High School and then attended Draughts Business School in San Angelo, returning to Mason to work for a time in the office of the County Attorney.

Zula Earline Johnson, aged 90, of Mason, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, March 8th, 2012, in Fredericksburg Memorial Hospital. She was born June 26, 1921, in Streeter, Texas, to Charlie and Nettie Mae Taylor. She was preceded in death by husband L. A. After a weeks practice with most of the team, the Varsity and JV Punchers took on the Harper Longhorns. The Mason fans braved the howling winds during these games instead of the misty rain at the last game. Austin Trip took the mound for the first time this season. In the top of the first inning, the Longhorns were able to put 3 runs on the board off 3 hits.
