It was a dream-like state with tales retold around 10,000 campfires, all of them—save one—meeting Smokey the Bear’s rigid standards. It was “come and go” for the afterglow as long-ago stories unrolled—many stretched—on recollections of biggest fish, deepest snow and ages of first bike rides, except for that one fire.

Spring has certainly come to central Texas with the abundance of wildflowers showing their colors in the past couple of weeks, and the warm weather that encourages us to leave the windows open and enjoy the fresh breeze. Of course there is also the threat of occasional severe thunder storms, and the green grass and weeds that need to be dealt with and kept from overgrowing the yards around the community.

No doubt you’ve heard it said there are certain subjects you should definitely avoid in polite conversation, in order to keep from causing an argument. One of these is politics. Another is religion. And a third, judging by a story recently sent to me by a concerned reader, is dogs in parks. Now, if you live in a fairly rural area, like I do, this may surprise you, but there are parks where dogs are not allowed, or if they are, they have to be on leashes all the time.

On Monday, I had seen a couple of photos on facebook; but, it wasn't until a bit later in the day that I saw one for myself. I was pushing a cart down the aisle at Super S when one of the 2011 Punchers turned, saw me coming, and proudly raised his hand, palm down.

Dear Mr. Boone Kemp, I’m sure you are a perfectly lovely man. But I find it rich that a member of the generation responsible for the biggest population boom ever is telling women to just keep their legs closed.Oh, & by the way, a concerned woman is not necessarily a confused woman.

Editor: Last Christmas, a misinformed reader wrote in condemning the term "Xmas," incorrectly implying that it was un-Christian and therefore disrespectful. Wonder how many people know where the term "Easter" comes from? It is derived from "Eostre," the Teutonic goddess of spring and fertility (hence, bunnies and eggs). Talk about un-Christian and disrepectful!

Gerry, Thankfully, Mr. Kemp’s Morality is not yet the Law of the land...nor is the Federal Government the Enforcement Arm of his, or any other, Church. Under our (Secular) form of Government, the Supreme Court gets to decide what falls under the Constitution. They did so, with Roe vs. Wade....

This letter is in response to two letters in last week's paper regarding women's reproductive issues. That old homily that women should keep their legs crossed just infuriates me. How about men should keep their zippers zipped. If all life is sacred why do we have so many people facig execution on Death Row?

OK, Gerry, I stated recently that Mr. Herbert Goff no longer facets gems. Mr. Goff called me, and assured me that he still cuts our wonderful topaz. So here I am, correcting my mistake. I am so glad to hear that Mr. Goff still produces gems. That means that the tradition is still continuing.
