The Story of Ferdinand. By Munro Leaf. Drawings by Robert Lawson. This year marks the 75th anniversary of its publication. A children’s book classic. Ferdinand the bull. He doesn’t want to fight. He wants to sit in the shade and smell the flowers. The author is long dead. The illustrator is long dead. But the story of Ferdinand lives on. For 75 years. Lots of little readers around the world. ...

Uncle Mort, my beloved kin, urges family and friends to avoid “putting big pots in little ones” as his 100th birthday on July 4 approaches. He’d rather do it himself. (Keep in mind his notice several months ago to “save the date.”) Now, he’s scurrying around to schedule back surgery the doctor has recommended unless Mort plans to “take things easy.” Mort has no such plans, and will NOT allow a back problem to reduce his “partying&r ...

There are two companies that really tick me off when I need to call them. Phone company and DIRECTV! When you get past the Yahoo sisters, and get to speak to a live body, you may not be able to understand them. Just because you have their products doesn’t mean that you a technically knowledge to fix your problem.

Green Super Foods such as Spirulina, Chlorella, and Blue-Green Algae all contain chlorophyll, protein, vitamin B-12, essential fatty acid GLA, trace minerals and other nutrients in a form that is easily assimilated by the human body. The wildflowers are abundant throughout the countryside and the ground and trees are starting to have their green covering that tells us that spring is here. The neighborhoods are all looking clean and fresh too, and this is a great time of year to take up walking through town for exercise and enjoyment.

Just like any type of cancer, if you can catch it early enough, you can often go on to live a full, healthy life afterwards. Colon cancer isn’t something people talk about much, but it is just as important to get a colonoscopy as it is a mammogram! At 36, Sandy White was tested for anemia, but exams suggested that she had a polyp in her colon.

There have been times when I’ve had to type my column carefully, because of damaged fingers, cuts with bulky Band-Aids on them, sprains and such. I’ve even had to type with one hand a few times, because the other was incapacitated due to one adventure or another. But this is the first column I’ve ever had to type by banging my forehead on the keyboard. My arms don’t work.

The spring wildflower season in Mason County is a time of mixed feelings. This is the one other time of the year, other than the fall hunting season, when the area is filled to bursting with visitors. Unlike hunting season, these folks aren't heading out to the cabins and saying away from town, instead, they are walking the square and heading in and out of all the stores. During Texas Topaz Day, I watched crowds making the rounds, taking photos and spinning around to take it all in.
