Three centuries ago, poet Alexander Pope penned that “a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.” If this be true, Americans are trapped squarely in the jaws of danger. We’re in an election year when hundreds of millions of media dollars are spent to provide the electorate with boatloads of “knowledge”—or, loosely translated, what politicians would have us believe to be truth. Gazillions of ad dollars go to clarify what is said, deny w ...

On Saturday night a young man, Dackota McCain, from Menard, Texas showed up at the cave to view the emergence of the bats. He brought along his sister, his dad and his three cousins. Much of the area adjacent to the James River and Llano was established as cattle ranching operations not long after the end of the Civil War as many in the South could foresee the end results of the war.

I get many questions from people. Here are some of them with brief answers. What is all of this about food allergies? Once, on a fishing trip to Rockport, I saw a couple of teenagers harrassing some seagulls in the HEB parking lot. They were in a pickup, and while one held a long French fry out the window, the other drove along just fast enough to stay ahead of a bunch of birds, who were all trying to catch up and grab the fry. That was pretty funny, and the more time I spend at the coast, the more sense it makes.
