All aboard. It’s a slippery slope now. Like a slide pointed towards Fall. Another school year soon begins. Make the most of those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer. Because they’re numbered. The heat’s a bummer. But it hasn’t slowed down the butterflies. Or lizards. Just the Llano River. Slow going there. Low water crossings without water. Thirsty birds. Painted B ...

The story goes that back in the 1930s, a Lions Club—two hours by train from Dallas—faced a dwindling membership, largely because one of its members was so obsessed with “Big D” that he could speak of little else. Lions grew weary of his ramblings. Upon learning that the old guy had never even been there, they decided to pass the plate.

When my girls were young they came up with the idea that they “needed” a horse. They talked about it when we ate, they talked about it when we played, they talked about it when they were getting ready for bed. I am sure that if I could have robbed their dream bank, I have no doubt that horses were what they counted instead of sheep. They gradually broke down every single line of defense in my mothering arsenal and we went to find the perfect horse.

I’ve seen rain go around us so many times, that I had started to doubt the power of my own prayer. Shame on me! A few hours after speaking openly about my doubt, we received a blessing from heaven of 8/10ths or 80 points of rain! Now please understand, the doubt was never if God could provide, but if I was worthy enough for my prayers to be heard, much less answered.

Celiac Disease is being diagnosed more and more often these days (it is most prevalent among non-Hispanic whites), and I’m sure you have noticed the growing amount of products available that are labeled “gluten free”. From time to time, I’ve received some emails that show Wal Mart Shoppers! I’ve been to a few Wal Marts in my day and I have never seen anything like what they show in these emails. I’ve never seen a multi-colored hair person in the Fredericksburg Wal Mart. Nor have I seen a man wearing high heels in the Brady Wal Mart.

Some new laws were enacted for Texas during 2011, laws we should all, as citizens, be aware of. Obviously, considering the previous sentence, none of these laws prohibit ending a sentence with a preposition. This is a good thing, I believe, since my family has a long history of ending sentences with prepositions, contrary to Oxford Rules.

When we have an intern at the News office, we know that we are only "borrowing" them for a short time. They come into our office, and our lives, and for a short time, they become part of our family. When Gideon Gonzales began working here two years ago, I worried that he might get overwhelmed by our personalities, as we all have a tendency to be a bit "over the top"

Dear Gerry, I have to admit that sometimes I skip the letters to the editor part of the paper because I get so tired of all the complaining people do. I get enough of that in day to day life! So I want to tell you somethings I’m grateful for. I go to Austin and visit family often, and they always ask how I can stand small town life.

His style is influenced by the vibrant hues and textures of Japan, South Africa, Mexico, and Spain...places he has lived and spent time.
