Parents, guardians, and students are invited to attend the Back to School/Meet the Teacher Night scheduled for Wednesday, August 22nd from 5:30-7:00 PM in the cafeteria located on the Mason Elementary/JH campus. The event is specifically targeted at parents of children in grades Pre-K through 4th grade. The contribution of parents and communication with parents are important factors in the education of MISD students.

The season has begun! Last Saturday, the Punchers scrimmaged Hamilton in Mason. This Thursday evenging at 6:00 p.m., the Varsity and Junior Varsity teams will srimmage in Blanco.

Alpha Beta Psi presented a $500.00 donation to the Mason County Chamber of Commerce to support the 2012 Mason County Queen’s Court. The money will help with the cost of the float, travel expenses and will enable the girls to have a wonderful year of promoting Mason County throughout the Hill country.

Mason County Habitat for Humanity (MCHFH) was recently honored as “Homebuilder Affiliate of the Year” by Habitat for Humanity Texas. The award was presented at the recent Habitat Leadership Conference held in Austin. The award recognizes one outstanding affiliate out of 48 in the state of Texas that builds one to five homes a year.

Now is the best time of year for presenting beautiful fruits as dessert. My daughter is still talking about the watermelon “shark” they served at Steady Steps (her day care center) for a snack recently. It is easy to get kids (or adults) excited about eating fruit if it is presented in a fun or beautiful way.

The Mason Lions club met Tuesday, August 14th, for its regular weekly luncheon meeting. There were 35 members and six visitors in attendance. Lion Jerry Bearden was responsible for the program and spoke about the courthouse restoration and renovation project. Judge Bearden said that the courthouse dome and roof was the main concern, along with the clock tower.

Last Saturday, the Puncher varsity and jv scrimmaged Hamilton in the Puncherdome. It was a first opportunity for fans to see the 2012 Punchers in action, and they did not disappoint. They will hit the gridiron again this Thursday evening down in Blanco in a second scrimmage leading up to our regular season. There has been a good deal of discussion about this year's Punchers.

Editor: Mason, Texas, has been my favorite place to visit for over 25 years. I come here as often as I can to experience the small-town friendliness, shop, and sight-see. I’ve become friends with several store-owners and always enjoy visiting them, walking through town in the early mornings, and driving the country roads in the evening to enjoy the wildlife.

We had a great Summer ACE Program! We focused on science activities including hydroponics, pollination, dissections, aquatic biology and solar energy. We are now looking forward to our Fall ACE program which will begin on Wednesday, August 29th. The ACE program is a fun and enriching afterschool program for K-8th grade students.

For the last eight years, Mason ISD has been a recipient of the 21st Century Community Learning Centers federal grant. With so many of our high school students involved in afterschool activities, we decided to have a BEFORE school program for them. This year our ACE program will be from 6:55 to 7:55 Monday through Thursday.

Ray and Ashley Duarte are excited to announce the birth of their baby girl, Paisley Raye Duarte. Paisley was born on July 13th, 2012, at Shannon Medical Center in San Angelo, Texas. This week’s dog of the week is Charlie, a male terrier mix approximately 8-10 months old. He is very playful and still has a lot of puppy in him. In addition to Charlie there are also nine puppies available that were surrendered last week. If you have been looking for a puppy, there is probably one there for you.

Anita Burg, age 94, is retiring as a Hill Country Memorial Hospital volunteer and charter member of the auxiliary after 43 years of service—the longest serving active volunteer in hospital history. Anita drove from Stonewall every week for her 4-hour shift and would often volunteer while others were on vacation.

FREDERICKSBURG, TX - At a hearing held on July 24, Central Texas Electric Cooperative (CTEC), along with six electric customers of LCRA, agreed to an expedited court hearing beginning August 27 in Austin. LCRA is asking the court to stop the customers from ending their wholesale power agreements. CTEC’s change of venue request to bring the case to Gillespie County will be among the first things likely to be considered by the Judge.

ET2 Melissa Garrison, granddaughter of Allene Garrison of Mason, was on board a Navy guided missle destroyer that was lef with a gaping hole on one side after it collided with an oil tanker just outside the strategic Strait of Hormuz. The collision left a breach about 10 feet by 10 feet in the starboard side of Garrison's ship, the USS Porter.

Judith Held Mikeska, age 75 of Kerrville, passed away Tuesday, August 14, 2012, in a local hospital. She was born July 6, 1937, in Sioux City, IA to Elmore and Lucille Douglas. She was a member of Resurrection Lutheran Church in Fredericksburg, TX. Her ministry in the church was to make sure everyone received a birthday and anniversary card.
