Friday, December 14th, is the deadline for making your donation to the annual Mason County E.M.S. fundraiser: “Operation Christmas Greeting”. A full-page “Community Greeting Card”, with an alphabetical listing of all contributors, will be in this paper’s Christmas edition on December 19th. The “Greeting’s” goal each year is to provide funds for needed equipment for our local E.M.S.

The Mason Community Choir is once again presenting a Christmas program titled “A Celebration of Carols” by Joseph M. Martin on Sunday, December 9th, 6:00 p.m. in the First United Methodist Church. This year familiar carols will be sung and the congregation will have opportunities to join in. Also children from the community will be included.

“No loitering.” The message seems abrasive; we recoil. “Loitering”—like “spoil, roil and embroil”—wallows in negativity. So does “soil” when used as a verb. It would seem as difficult to enforce as those “NO STOPPING OR STANDING” signs on city streets. Come on now. Have you ever seen or heard of a citation for either one?

Now that we have all been given a lesson in Lasses Making, there are other events that are worth noting that have somewhat of a humorous nature for most of us and most can relate to those times as the GOOD OLD DAYS but they were not as forgiving as we wish to believe but we were in those times together as not many advantages were handed out at the end of WW 2 with employment in our area almost none!!!. When making traditional jams and jellies, sugar is an important ingredient. It serves as the preservative, helps the pectin produce a good gel, and adds flavor. However, there is a growing interest and desire for jams and jellies made with either sugar substitutes or less sugar. Is this possible? The answer is yes, but it requires the use of special recipes.

We are thrilled to be added to the First Friday Art Walk this week, and we have a wide variety of art to be seen. We have high school art, elementary art, Nadine Eby’s ( the Artist of the Month) display, some of Laverne Lee’s works, and the Quilt of the Month, not to mention the marquetry, “Children of the World” quilt, oil paintings, and embroidered “Wildflowers” panel.

The Mason Lions club met Tuesday, November 27th, for its regular weekly luncheon meeting. There were 39 members and five visitors in attendance. Lion Kirby Groves was responsible for the program and introduced Lance Rausch, Ag teacher at Mason High School, who broought the FFA Radio Team for a presentation in preparation for the state conest. The team consisted of Cassie Benefield, Margaret Lemke and Bria Martinez.

Live with us. Be our dog. Tie us down so we had to arrange for her care when we were gone, make messes for us to clean up, and cost us money for her food and medical care.

The Arnold Art Gallery in Mason, Texas will host an exhibition of paintings by Neal Wilson with an opening reception and “Meet the Artist” on December 7 from 5:00-7:00. On December 7th at 6 p.m., the Mason VFW Post 8554 will hold a ceremony to remember Pearl Harbor Day. At the completion of this ceremony we will hold our Christmas party. During the party we will draw the tickets for rhe raffle. We invite county veterans to come and join us, as there will be games and door prizes as well as refreshments. This will serve as our December meeting, so come by the American Legion hall and join the in with your fellow veterans.

The west Texas Scorpions minor league football team is excited to announce they will host a Wounded Warrior Project football game in honor of the brave veterans in Mason, Brady and surrounding cities. Provided by the Texas Brigades, I got to go on my Assistant Herd Leader hunt with five other guys. My hunt was located on the Flojo Ranch near Freer, Texas. My friends Justin, Dillion, Charlie, Jacob, and Tristan were there with me giving me pointers before I went into the stands because I’ve never been hunting before.

Second Chance – Mason Animal Rescue’s pet of the week this week is Angel, a young female pit bull. Angel is a beautiful and sweet girl. She is housebroken and current on her vaccinations. As with all animals adopted through Second Chance, Angel’s adoption fee will also include being spayed before she goes to her new forever home. There is also a litter of beautiful hound mix puppies that will be available to go to new homes in a couple of weeks.

Gravesite of Conrad Simon, born in 1832 in Germany and “founder” of the community of Simonsville, was buried in the Simon Cemetery below Todd Mountain in 1921. There are still quite a few of his descendants in the Mason area.

On December 1, 2012, Christine Leeann Herrera graduated from Concordia University in Austin, Texas, with a Master of Business Administration. Christine accomplished earning her master's degree while working full time and going to school at night. She was determined to accomplish her goal. We are all very proud of her accomplishment.

Volunteers at the Simon Cemetery clean-up day on Saturday, Dec. 1 were Bob & Linda Laury, Jerry Carlman, Kristan Kale, landowners Ron & Lee Lange, Denwood Butler, Scott Zesch, and Jan Appleby. Just as rabies was a serious disease in the frontier days, it continues to be a problem in Texas today. This disease took the life of Arlis’s beloved ‘Ole Yeller’ in a dramatic, heartbreaking conclusion. The state of Texas requires that dogs and cats be vaccinated against rabies by 4 months of age and on a 1-year or 3-year basis thereafter depending on the vaccine used.

Boys from Central Texas Children’s Home, Buda; Texas Baptist Home, Round Rock; Methodist Boy’s Home, Waco; Texas Baptist Children’s Home, Waxahachie; John Carl Smith Foster Home, Mullin; and Hughes Foster Home, San Angelo came Friday evening eager to enjoy the next day’s hunting activities.

The FAAHC Show and Sale held on November 31st and December 1st at the Mason Eckert Civic Center was colorful and creative. Margaret Catherine (Humpal) Molzan passed away gently in her sleep on Wednesday, November 28, 2012, at the age of 93. She was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on April 23, 1919, and like so many others, experienced the difficulties of those times. Her father died before her birth in the Spanish influenza epidemic, and she grew up with her working mother, grandmother, and five uncles.

The settlement of Mason grew up around Ft. Mason and was established by the U. S War Department as a front line defense against the Kiowa, Lipan Apache and the Comanche on July 6th 1851. On December 7th 2012 in Round Rock the battle continues, only this time it will be the Mason Punchers versus the Comanches of Shiner.
