Christmas, as we all know, is a very stressful time of year for most Americans. According to a stastic I plan to make up before I finish this sentence, the divorce rate increases ten percent or more during this festive season of peace on earth and goodwill toward men. Most psychologists will tell you that’s because of the stress of the season, but then, most psychologists probably hated their mothers, so there’s no use listening to them. No, the real reason for my invented divorce stat is ...

The Mason Lions club met Tuesday, December 18th, for its annual Christmas luncheon. There were 37 members and 30 visitors in attendance. Lion Kendal Hemphill was responsible for the program and introduced John Jefferson, outdoor writer and ex lawyer, who spoke about some of his experiences while he was the Assistant District Attorney in Alice, Texas, Duval County, during the George Parr era. He had several interesting stories to tell and said he would not take a million dollars for his time ...

Now that you've gotten all the STUFF, where are you going to put it? The tree looks sad, with no pretty gifts below it. The trash cans are full and you don’t have a pick up for four more days. The lines are long at the customer service departments. You indulged in all the goodies and now you bulge.

It is a day after Christmas and the wrapping paper and boxes have been gathered for the trash and recycling, the leftovers still fill the refrigerator and most people are trying to figure out what else needs to be done before the end of the week. I hope each of you had a joyous and blessed Christmas time with family and friends and are preparing to welcome the New Year with a careful celebration and a commitment to new resolutions that might last more than a week or two.

In my last column a couple of weeks ago I wrote about the unusual geography that has appeared on some of the early maps of North America, particularly those that were published before the American revolution. Certainly one of the most interesting misrepresentations that was common for about a hundred years before 1730 was the depiction of California as a large island parelleling the west coast of America.

I love roast. It’s simple, it’s inexpensive, and if there are any leftovers there are tons of options. Since I am a Crockpot Queen, I usually just toss one in the slow cooker with some potatoes, onions and carrots. But for something a little more “elegant”, here is some information from the Texas Beef Council.

Rarely does one meet an individual with a heartbeat so strong for humanity and a “what’s in it for others” attitude. His smile engages and his countenance ignores advancing years. He glows with goodwill, projecting unbounded love for others—a grand example of “The Greatest Generation.” I met him recently. You may think he’s a giant Texan—one with life’s papers neatly arranged into chapters, ready for sainthood. And, you’d be wrong.

‘Twas the night after Christmas. And all through the house. Everyone slept. Even the mouse. The stockings that were hung Now lay on the floor. Santa’s gone. There’ll be no more. So many guests. So many laughs. So much food. Might have to fast. Paper and ribbons. And boxes galore. TV on. What’s the score? Leftover ham. Hmmm, a sandwich. Jell-o salad. Some more pie. Hot cocoa. Tamales and frijoles. Hot toddy. Angels soar. Watch the little ones. Play with the toys. ...

My letter is in response to Julie’s letter last week. Stricter gun control is not the answer to protecting our children. In fact it will do more damage than good. You asked “If in the end the solution makes it harder for a person to buy a gun, so what?” Well I will tell you what, Adam Lanza didn’t have guns that HE legally obtained.

I am horrified by the shooting in Newtown, Ct., as I am sure everyone that heard about it is. An incident like this is beyond imagining, and my heart goes out to everyone affected by this tragedy. When something like this happens, aside from the expected media frenzy, the next thing we start hearing about is “guns need to be more regulated.” Well, that hasn’t helped much - as the old saying goes, “if guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns.” I propose that the knee-jerk anti- ...

Dear Mr. Gamel I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank the members of the Mason County Welfare Board for assisting me in my education. Without their generous offer I would never have been able to take my dual credit course in American History. This is my first dual credit class I have been enrolled in, and it is a wonderful experience.

I tried to count up the number of New Year's resolutions I've made in my life. Discounting the first few years when I couldn't say the word resolution, and overlooking the years I decided to simply forego them, I could probably still come up with two dozen or so during my 53 years. They're silly, if you stop to think about it.
