The holiday season is supposed to be festive and fun, but it’s difficult to be optimistic about the new year with the shadow of the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy, and the sorrow of the families torn apart by that evil, hanging over the country. Like no other horror has done since 9-11-01, the mass murder of twenty young children and six adults in Newtown, Connecticut on 14 December 2012 has shocked, saddened, and humbled the nation.

New Year’s is just behind us, the holiday decorations are coming down and being packed away until next fall and most of us are just trying to get back to a regular work schedule and catch up with the delayed projects that always clutter the first weeks of every year.

Start the new year with a resolve to take a little time out for yourself or try something new. A great way to transcend daily worries is to read a great book—and we have them! Also, a new round of Computer Basics and Microsoft Word classes has been scheduled for Jan.

I look forward to having my family stay over, but trying to feed everyone in the morning is such a hassle. Everyone’s getting up at different times, some like to eat right away and some don’t. Others like a big breakfast and others only want coffee. Here are some helpful hints from UNL Extension to help you out! Consider setting out a help-yourself buffet for whenever they’re hungry.

Resolutions - It’s that time again. Here are some things to think about when making your resolutions for the New Year. Resolutions can be broken down into 2 categories. The things “not to do” and things “to do”. If health is on your agenda for the new year, then consider one or more of these “not to do’s”.

So far as I know, there are no findings to suggest that persons careful to “dot every ‘i’ and cross every ‘t’” get it right significantly more often than the rest of us who are more prone to be slip-shod in such matters. Such seemed even more the case in yesterday’s world, when most communication consisted of complete sentences and “uncontracted” words.

Happy New Year! May 2013 bring you Health and Happiness! Every year there are resolutions to be made and, of course, broken. I just don't want to repeat the same mistakes I made in 2012-11-10-09-08 & 07! The most popular resolution is weight loss!! Intentions are there, but sometimes not the true desire to make it a reality.

When one year ends and the new one begins, I always enjoy reflecting on the good things that have occurred in the prior year. I choose not to focus on the bad, as there is no changing those things now, I can only learn from them and move forward. The good things, however, offer hope and promise for even more good things and give me hope for what could be in the coming year. During 2012, we finally got some rain.
