A Travis County district court judge has granted the Lower Colorado River Authority’s motion for partial summary judgment and determined that LCRA had not violated wholesale power agreements with four of its customers. AUSTIN, Texas (Jan. 25, 2013) – The Hill Country Film Festival (HCFF), an annual independent film event in Fredericksburg, Texas, has partnered with the Texas Independent Film Network (TIFN) and the Odeon Theater in Mason, Texas, to screen independent films made in the Lone Star State. The first film of 2013, When I Rise (Texas 2010), will screen Wednesday, February 6, at 6:00 p.m. When I Rise is a documentary film that premiered on the acclaimed PBS series Independent Lens in 2011.

The Mason Rodeo Association has been very busy making improvements to the Ft Mason Park Arena. In the picture above, you can see where a new center alley is planned and will run under the new announcer’s stand and between new pens. A fenced warm up pen is planned for the area where the old alley was and this set up will make events much safer for both spectators and competitors.

SECOND CHANCE – Mason Animal Rescue is a non-profit animal rescue group formed in March of 2012. Their mission is to find homes for abandoned or unwanted adoptable animals, develop a spay/neuter program and educate the community on the humane treatment of animals. Since March of 2012, Second Chance has found homes for over 55 dogs and over 65 cats that were unwanted or abandoned in Mason.

Most Americans who are in any way interested in the outdoors have, by now, probably heard of SHOT Show, which is the largest, most impressive, and most exhausting outdoor products exhibition in the world. The Shooting, Hunting, and Outdoor Trade Show is hosted by the National Shooting Sports Foundation every January in Lost Wages, Nevada.

The Mason Lions club met Tuesday, January 22nd, for its regular weekly luncheon meeting. There were 35 members and one visitor in attendance. Lion Harold Hoerster was responsible for the program and introduced Elba Nail, Texas Department of Transportation Maintenance Supervisor, who spoke about the state road system in Mason County. Elba said that their crew took care of over 212 miles of highway in Mason County with only contract labor (such as the litter pickup and the right-of-way mowing) ...

Since the first of this year I have tried to share the current and future plans for each of the City departments in my columns each week. One department that I have not covered yet is the Landfill and the Garbage collection, but that too is an area that we are pleased with and looking forward to additional improvements.

Betty Bauer, long time member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Castell is moving to San Angelo. She will be dearly missed not only by her church family at Trinity but also by her Art UMC church friends. Pastor Cliff Krcha is the minister for Trinity UMC and Art UMC and as a result of combined programs and activities, Betty has become a dear church friend at Art as well.

We recently have had several folks come in to get tax forms; regrettably, we’ve been notified that we will not be receiving a tax form book this year. To get particular forms, you’ll have to go online. If you don’t have a computer at home, you can come use ours for free and print out the forms you need for $.15 a page.

Just having to walk by treadmills, stationary bikes, and weight machines can be enough to make you head straight back home to the couch. Dear Jerry, The Riata Service Organization would like to express their appreciation to the individuals who added an extra Christmas greeting to our town this past Christmas. Due to court house renovation the city was unable to put Christmas lights on it so it was rather drab. Around the Feed Store coffee maker the coffee drinkers dug deep into their own pockets and provided two "Merry Christmas"

The President is talking about finacial reform. Why doesn't he start collecting all of those Billions of dollars that have acured durring his first 4 years in office and collt all the interest due. Like TEXAS loaning all that water we loaned MEXICO that we have not collected any type of paymints on this deal. But the Congress wants to do away with gun.

I've never traveled abroad; but, I still hope to travel to Europe sometime in my life. And, when I go, I really want to travel to Britain. With its many historical and ethnic connections to the United States, the British Isles holds an important spot in the lives of most Americans. Till such time as I make my travel plans, I make do with British television imports.

The Mason County Youth Rally and Lock-in was created for the area youth to experience fun, games,challenges and fellowship in a Christian environment. We have guest speakers who share their testimonies, and an awesome band who share their love for the Lord through music. The two speakers for this year's rally are Clarence Lee and Keith Davis.

The Central Basin Chapter (CBC) of the Edwards Plateau Prescribed Burning Association will hold the 2013 Annual Meeting at the Castell Community Center on February 15, 2013, beginning at 9:00 a.m. The agenda will include election of officers and planning for prescribed buns during 2013. The Mason Study Club’s Constitution and By-Laws specifically state that their main purpose is support of the Library. On Wednesday, January 23rd, the Mason Study Club presented the Mason County Library with a donation. The donation was presented to Nancy Scholibo, assistant librarian. This donation was made possible from the various fundraisers that the Study Club has had since September, including hot dog sales at Old Yeller Days and the Chili served on the Square in November.

Operation Orphans, Inc. held its fourth hunt of the 2012 hunting season January 12th. 64 boys from 11 children’s homes and foster facilities participated. The 64 boys harvested 64 animals which consisted of 46 whitetail does, 6 spikes, 6 management bucks, 3 hogs, 2 aoudad, and 1 sika. Second Chance – Mason Animal Rescue has nine new pets of the week but this is the kind of story we do not like to have to tell. Nine beautiful and helpless hound mix puppies around three months old were found dumped on the side of the road over the weekend.

There will be an opening for an exhibit from 5-7 PM, Friday February 1 at the Arnold Art Gallery, 118 Ft. Mc Kavitt, across the street from the Courthouse in Mason, Texas. AUSTIN, TX- District Court Judge Scott Jenkins granted LCRA’s Motion for Partial Summary Judgment in its ongoing dispute with Central Texas Electric Cooperative (CTEC) about the termination of a long-standing wholesale power agreement. CTEC terminated its Wholesale Power Agreement (WPA) with the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) in September, citing multiple grounds.

Can you imagine cooking 275 meals in an un-airconditioned kitchen five days a week during the recent summer months? Last June the temperature in Junction hit 107 degrees! This is the situation faced by the cooks at the Kimble County Meals on Wheels. The Kimble County Meals on Wheels serves over 275 meals each weekday to elderly, home-bound, and disabled citizens spread over 4078 square miles covering four counties: Mason, Concho, Menard, and Kimble.

Pearl Emma Leifeste, of Art, passed away on Sunday, January 27, at the age of 100. Pearl was born in Mason County on October 18, 1912, to Adolph Vater and Medora Dannheim Vater. She was raised in the Art Community. On September 18, 1931, Pearl married Reuben Leifeste at the Art North Methodist Church.

Joseph Thorpe Sr. (LTC, U.S.M.C. Retired), of Mason, passed away on Thursday, January 24, at the age of 70. Mr. Thorpe is survived by his wife Marylee Thorpe, of Mason, two sons Jim Thorpe and wife Wendy of Houston and Joseph Thorpe Jr. and wife Elizabeth of Lake Forest, California, five grandchildren Joseph Culter, Cody Thorpe, Danielle Thorpe, Lauryn Thorpe and Morgyn Thorpe.
