In my constant quest for breads and other baked goods that are quick to make and great to eat, I occasionally stumble across a real winner. This is one of those breads! The total “active involvement” time by the baker is really small; possibly 20 minutes, at the outside. While it does require an overnight rise, you don’t have to look in on it while it’s doing its rise thing.

The coyote situation has gotten completely out of hand in America. I base this statement on the headlines of three stories that have been sent to me recently by supposed readers of my column, which stories I’m considering actually reading, unless I can manage to get today’s column written just by using information gleaned from the headlines, supplemented with facts I can make up myself.

Last week I had the privilege of learning about the life of a modern day believer and disciple of Jesus Christ. Sadly, it had to be at her funeral. Pearl Leifeste of Art passed away on January 27th, at the age of 100. I had met Pearl and spoke with her briefly at church on the few occasions when she was able to attend.

Asking southerners to enunciate more clearly is about as pointless as requesting New Yorkers to start talking with a drawl. It just “ain’t” gonna happen. Most of ‘em have southern drawls, and all of ‘em swear that Yankees “talk funny.” (Change the setting geographically, and the folks up north think the very same thing about us in Texas.) Pick a coffee place where old-timers gather in these parts, and drawls seem even more pronounced…. ***** Anyway, the upbeat spirit daily ...

Gee whiz. There’s a new science out there. It’s called Gee-Whiz-ology. You heard it here first. (Because I just made it up.) A new science for the New Age. The study of awe. As in “awesome.” Or “golly gee whiz.” We can say that about so many things in life. The very ordinary becomes extraordinary. Every day. All the time. To be in awe. It’s all in the eye of the beholder. Redbird in a bare tree. Bulbs coming up. Ice frosting the pastures. And the ponds. And ...

“Corditie” Response Have been aroused by the Outdoors Outpost column submitted by Kendal Hemphill on your January 20th edition. The thought of Senior (almost 80 years old) Senator Dianne Feinstein from the State of California, (my home State) born in San Francisco (also home of my birth) as the true source of the ban on weapons of minor destruction sticks in my craw.

This is in response to the letter by Mr. Thompson. Here are some cold hard facts. In 2011, 39.98% of the Texas State budget came from the Federal Government. While Texas secessionists proclaim their state as one of the largest and therefore most capable of maintaining independence, Texas has one of the highest rates of poverty in the nation.

All media, whether newspapers, radio stations or television channels, make absolutely no money from their content. They make derive a small percentage of their revenue from subscribers; but, that is not the driver behind their successes. That money comes from advertising. There are ads for products (corn, tires, cars, shoes), for services (welding, plumbing, construction, bookkeeping), and for happenings (CASA gala, Habitat Fundraiser, Spanish Club Music Fest, barbecue supper).
