For years, literally, I’ve been vexed by a nagging question. It’s a question that doesn’t really have a satisfactory answer; at least not one I’ve been able to come up with. And I’ve tried. I’ve thought about this question, real hard, for upwards of two and three minutes at a time.

It’s been awhile that I’ve written about the dogs in our lives. Cousin Louie has put on some weight and Z told me I needed to put him on a diet? Not going to happen! He keeps busy most everyday practicing “Lazy!” He needs that extra food to keep him nourished. Natcha is the old lady of the clan and still wants nothing to do with anyone but me.

On a beautiful winter day in the Texas Hill Country, you can see the glory of God’s love all around us. How can one not have faith and love for our Creator! We have faith that our car will start, faith that our school districts will teach our children the best curriculum available, faith in our banks to keep our money safe, and the list goes on and on.

Vision problems occur for various reasons. Many times the problem is due to poor diet. A diet of denatured and preservative laden food leads to the free radical damage that is implicated in many conditions affecting the eyes. A deficiency of just one vitamin can lead to various eye problems that can sometimes be corrected with supplementation of the correct vitamins and minerals.

A few weeks ago I wrote about some of the descriptions of the Mason area that were published by John Bartlett noting the landscape he passed through in 1850 before the Calvary arrived to found Fort Mason. As I was writing that article I got to thinking of some of the other traveler’s journals that might shed some light on how the early visitors saw this part of Texas.

Guinness World Records is bound to have a new entry, thanks to Super Bowl XLVII. Surely a record number of curses were screamed against the darkness when the lights went out in New Orleans. A blue haze of epithets remained long after game’s end. The restless crowd wanted no part of candles.

Poles. Posts. Columns. We run into them. We dig holes for them. We set them. We lean against them. Was a day when we tied our horses to ‘em. Now we string wire and cable from them. Running electricity and telephone service here, there, and yonder. We also wrap posts with barbed wire. Run flags up a pole. Build a porch with columns. (Those always add a touch of class.) A variety of poles, posts, and columns can be seen marching around the square. Start at the northeast corner. ...

Fire moves fast and so do the Mason and Loyal Valley VFD’s. On Tuesday, February 5, a grass fire ensued in one of our coastal fields. It was mortifying and more than shocking, to say the least. After a trembling call to our area 911, it only took minutes for both VFD’s to arrive on site and begin dousing this serious danger with speed, skill and intense professionalism.

Every spring, the guessing begins anew. Will the bluebonnets bloom in profusion? Where will they be best viewed? Will they cover the hillsides, or be sprinkled only in the roadsides and other isolated areas? How long will the blooms last, and will the other wildflowers fill in quickly? It's anyone's guess each year as to what the spring will offer.
