Mason art students competed in the Regional Visual Art Scholastic Event on February 23 in Brady. Out of eight works of art advancing to the state competition five were from Mason High School. The state competition will be held on April 5th and 6th in College Station. The Mason High School One Act Company began the competition season last Thursday in Sonora. Their play, Crimes of the Heart, by Beth Henley, was presented at the zone competition and earned the award to advance to the District Competition. Each cast member received acting awards: Best Actor – Elliot Bibb, Best Actress – Caroline Hudson, All-Star Cast – Claudia Canfield, Honorable All-Star Cast – Cassie Benefield and Katherine Koock.

One of our favorite stops on the Art Walk is the Artisan Gallery, owned by painter Sue Kaan, featuring 100% Mason artists and artisans in media from oil to wool to silver. The Artisan Gallery is both grateful and excited to be celebrating our Fourth Anniversary in April. Part of this anniversary celebration invites naturalists in the area to visit anytime to examine a special cube of Mason Nature and to identify the over 40 distinct bio-facts brought together for this occassion.

During Monday's regularly scheduled meeting of the Mason County Commissioners' Court, the two most time consuming matters for the group involved courthouse repairs and EMS staffing. During the discussions on the current renovations and repairs to the courthouse building, Commissioner Stephen Mutschink shared his observations of the work that has been conducted thus far, and discussed some of the tasks that still remain to be done before the project can be termed completed.

That doesn’t necessarily mean news you need to know, but then, you can’t have everything. Where would you put it? Our first news item is the new Gun Free Zone app available for iPhones, Androids, and some other cellular telephones.

The Mason Lions club met Tuesday, March 19th, for its regular weekly luncheon meeting. There were 38 members and two visitors in attendance. Among the visitors was one Mason High School senior, Courtney Brown. Lion Fritz Landers was responsible for the program and introduced Max Hartman, Special Ranger with the Texas & Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association from Doss, Texas. We have “Earthly Pleasures!” What I consider an Earthly Pleasure, may be YUCK to someone else. These days mine are somewhat not “Politically Correct?” However, giving up one to please some folks, just isn’t going to happen. Number one are Cigarettes! Yes, I smoke! Daylight savings time seemed to arrive early this year, along with the grandchildren’s spring break, eighty degree temperatures, and it’s still March. Trees are blooming, bluebonnets are popping, even the hummingbirds are already here looking for their feeders and Monday morning was in the upper 20’s. We are still waiting for rain!

Gerry, I have been accused, more than once, of selling topaz from other locations, and representing it as from Mason County. This has happened a number of times, and has been reported to me by customers and friends, and this time, on Texas Topaz Day, when it happened again, the lie and attempt to steal my customer was witnessed by a family member.

Dear Editor: My friends and I spent this past weekend in Mason/Fredericksburg for a getaway weekend from Houston. When planning the trip, we were so excited to see that the weekend coincided with Texas Topaz Day in Mason on Saturday, March 23rd. The Mason County Courthouse is currently enjoying a sprucing up of its electrical system, its roof, the dome and the clocks. Like any remodeling project, it has not been without its hiccups. During the repair of the outdated electrical distribution system, there was a bit of confusion as to identification of specific circuits and which breaker connected to what wire.

The Mason Garden Club met at The Green House March 19th. Jeff Durst and his wife, Margaret, own this organic nursery and natural health store. Jeff presented a program on “New Plants for Spring Planting.” He is especially proud of his heirloom tomatoes that he grows from seed. He also gave tips on controlling insects and diseases the natural way and how to improve the soil for healthy plants.

The Mason County Republican Women held its bi-monthly meeting on Wednesday, March 20th in the Stribling Room of the Eckert Public Library. Sixty-five descendants of Johann Julius Conrad Pluenneke held a family reunion at the ranch home of Terry and Judy Pluenneke and at the Hilda Community Clubhouse on Saturday, March 9th. The reunion was held in honor of our German “cousin”, Friedrich Pluenneke, who made his first visit to Texas. Another cousin, Robert Feuge, of Sedona, AZ also attended the reunion.

Steve and Jill Cochran are proud parents of a baby boy. Cale Alan Cochran was born February 7, 2013, in Lubbock Texas. He weighed seven pounds, 10 ounces and was 22 inches long. He is welcomed by big sister Clara, grandparents Fred and Joan Kettner of Mason, grandparents Dean and Sue Cochran of Perryton, and great grandmother Marian Leifeste of Mason.

Nine-year-old Cole Valiente shot his first turkey during the morning hunt of the youth-only spring turkey season on March 24, 2013. He was hunting just west of Mason, TX with his Ruger .22 Hornet. He made a perfect shot and his family are very proud of him.

Hazel Marie Russell Barrington, 93, of Mason, Texas, passed away on March 20, 2013, at her residence. Hazel was born in Georgetown, Texas, on March 11, 1920. She was the youngest of eight children to Charles Thomas and Nora Ann Vann Russell. Being the last surviving member of her family, she was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, four brothers, and a beloved grandson.

Scoreboard operators were busy on Tuesday, March 12th, as Punchers and Ozona lions combined for 24 runs. Punchers eventually won the offensive battle 14-10 in seven innings. The teams combined for 22 hits, including seven extra base hits. Punchers got its bats going early, scoring four runs in the first inning to pull ahead of Ozona lions .

The Punchers jumped out to an early lead on the Junction Eagles and captured a 16-0 victory on Friday, March 15th, at Mason TX. Nine runs in the first three innings allowed Punchers to put the game away early. The Mason High School golf team ended their preseason tournament play Monday at the Buckhorn Open. The Punchers took second and sixth place. Jeffrey Williams was 4th medalist over all. Puncher team #1 was made up of Sammy Martinez, Kerby O’Connell, Daniel Parker, Woody Watson and Jeffrey Williams. Puncher team #2 was made up of Chris Gray, Charles Martinez, Jay Angelo Martinez, Jacob Moreno and Ryan Wartenbach. The Cowgirls placed first and second.
