Back when I was in high school, about the time electricity was invented, there was a big scandal when some U.S. military bigwigs were caught with their hands in the cookie jar. They were buying supplies from companies at inflated prices, such as $2,000 hammers, and $800 toilet seats, in exchange for kickbacks from those companies.

Our God is great; listen to His words and understand! The Gospel lesson for the 12th Sunday after Pentecost came from Luke 12:32-40. In verse 32, Jesus said, “Do not be afraid, O little flock; for your Father is pleased to give you the kingdom.” In many places, we are told ‘do not be afraid’ and ‘fear not’ but we also know that the “Fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” Know that God watches over you and supplies your needs just as He watches over the birds in the field ...

I got to see and play with my new Granddaughter Lucy (blond lab), this weekend. She is so full of energy. Lucy wore out Cousin Louie, however, that doesn’t take much to over exert Louie! He was resting when she left and didn’t even get up to see her off!

The weather continues hot and mostly dry and when a cloud does blow by and drop a few raindrops, they evaporate almost as we watch. The Fire Marshall told me last week that the fire index has just crept over 600, on a scale of 800, and continues to rise every day and the County wisely continues to maintain a burn ban in effect.

Many nutritional factors affect our mood. Mood is determined not only by what we think and feel, but by physiological things such as blood sugar, food sensitivities, liver function and vitamin and mineral deficiencies. Foods greatly influence the brain. Poor diets, particularly those with too much sugar, caffeine and junk food are a common cause of depression and irritability.

Man’s inhumanity to man is well documented. Goodwill toward others, however, often goes unnoticed, unheralded and unappreciated. Teachers, on the cusp of another school year, play major roles in helping others daily. Following the “do unto others” admonition, most of them routinely toil beyond duty’s call. We owe ongoing salutes to committed educators, and to all folks who offer smiles daily as they celebrate life…. ***** One such celebrant is Megan Harris, a 23-year-old Amarillo ...

Dear Gerry - Every week I see "Pray For Rain" in the newspaper, and while it is proper for us to approach God reverently, asking Him to provide for our needs, we should begin each day by FIRST asking Him how we can serve Him. God created mankind to serve, obey and praise Him, first and foremost.

“We’re using scarce resources to get scarce resources.” This statement was made by a Houston oil corporation vice president in 2011, the year of the worst Texas drought on record. He was referring to the massive use of freshwater in the oil and gas fracking boom. The oil corporations know freshwater is scarce in Texas but they use it by the billions of gallons each year because the way Texas water laws are written, no one can stop them.

Last Saturday, our friends over in McCulloch County traveled back in time. For 18 hours, the City of Brady and much of the county lost electrical power. Lights. Air conditioners. Water. Stoves. Gasoline. In just a short time after the storms that moved through had disabled power lines from both the north and south of town, McCulloch County residents had to learn how to do without! I started seeing facebook comments about the power outage.
