A friend sent me an email recently and asked me, “Kendal, why are schools all over the country holding gun buyback programs for toy guns in elementary schools? Are they stupid, or what?” Honestly, I thought the guy was just being whiney. I’d heard of one or two toy gun buybacks, but not a lot of them.

We were watching an old episode of “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives” the other night, and the chef at a little dive in Chicago made up a bread that he used in his restaurant, and that he sold to other eateries in the area. The recipe was simple, using just 4 ingredients, and the results looked and sounded great.

Our God is great; listen to His words and understand! Stephen Mutschink presented the message while Pastor Cliff and Vicki served at Mt Wesley during Kingdom Camp. Would you recognize Jesus if He were to walk with you as He did on the road to Amahs? Jeremiah accused the Jews in Jeremiah 2:7-14 of breaking the rules, defiling the land and doing those things that did not profit.

A generation ago, my wife proclaimed a small victory. “We can mark that one off,” she said. “I’ve just taken our youngest to the pediatrician’s office for the last time.” “Congratulations,” I purred. “No more waiting in pediatricians’ offices for us.” (Warning: Saying “no more” with such finality is essentially the same as “never again.”) Years later at a Dallas speaking engagement, my turn at the lectern was delayed by a talented male quartet’s 45 minutes of s ...

Health Check - September 10th - 8 - 11 a.m. Know your numbers. I talk to many people in the course of business. I find that most don’t know much about their blood work. I am writing this on Labor Day When only a few businesses are open around the square in Mason. Even with a day off, there are a number of things that have to happen around town to keep all of the City services running and in good shape. For example, the Waste Water department has to spend some time everyday, even on holidays and weekends, making sure that the sewer plant is functioning properly and checking that there is nothing blocking up any sewer lines.

Litany of the Working Person— Give out. Tired. Tard. (As Grandma Nano used to say.) Plum tuckered out. Spent. Stick a fork in me, I’m done. I’ve had it. I’m toast. Kaput. Finito. I’m outta here. Get-up-and-go has got up and went. No energy. Pooped. I got nuthin.’ I’m beat. Worn out. Weary. Depleted. Dead tired. Fatigued. (Sound familiar?) Run ragged. Run down. Done in. Bushed. Worn to a frazzle. Cansado. Fatigado. Aburrido. Dog-tired. Dead on my ...

Is terminal grumpiness one of the symptoms of getting older? I used to laugh at the old men sitting around at the Katemcy Store and Post Office, esepecially when I would hear them complaining and carping about everything. Not every old person I have known in my life was grumpy, so much like arthritis or high blood pressure, I can only assume that grumpiness is something that affects the few, not the many.
