The Mason Punchers came within just seconds last Friday of keeping the Goldthwaite Eagles completely off the scoreboard. In a game that saw both teams trading possession of the ball repeatedly, the final score does not accurately reflect the intensity of the game that was played. Though the Punchers won the game 26-7, Mason only had a total of 223 yards for the night, compared to Goldthwaite's 200.

You would think a family of five that owns five Remington 870 shotguns would eventually get a call to do a Remington commercial. But then, you would think a guy who has been shooting doves since he was in short britches would average better than five birds per box. Wrong on both counts. Two of my sons, Paden and Leret, and I headed to Buda for the dove opener this year.

My mother always told me, “If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all.” I have ABSOLUTELY nothing nice to say at this time! Hopefully, by this time next week I can have something nice to say! P.S. According to GRANDPA’S COUNTRY WISDOM; “The difference between young liars and old thieves, is just a matter of time.”

Our God is great; listen to His words and understand! Luke 14:25-35 is the parable about the cost of being a disciple. Most of chapter 14 is about the “Kingdom of God on earth” and “life as a follower of Jesus” A large crowd continued to follow Jesus to Jerusalem. Some believe Jesus is on his way to Jerusalem to conquer the Roman Government and reestablish God’s blessings on the Jewish people.

Joint Pain or arthritis is the number one chronic illness in America. One person in 7 suffers from it. Many people are use glucosamine, chondroitins and MSM to manage pain and to supply building materials for joint repair. While these are very helpful, particularly with osteoarthritis, I would like to mention some other natural remedies for arthritis. Diet changes can be as remarkable as any drug or supplement in eliminating joint pain and inflammation throughout the body.

The picture of the gin in Erna depicts the industrial activity generated about 1900 with the upcoming cotton growth activity in the Leon Valley. In the late 1800’s when each of the settlers began to tame the new frontier and accumulate the basic staples, each began clearing land and more land so by 1900, I would guess that in the Leon Valley, some 500 acres of cotton was planted and by 1930, I would estimate that approx.

There have been rains around the area for the past few weeks, and although no one I have talked with has had as much as they would want, all of us are grateful for every cloud in the sky. With the scattered rains the landscape is also looking healthy and green for this time of year and it seems that there is plenty of water for everyone and for every need.

Though football is “gorilla big” in Texas, headlines splashed atop sports pages heralding the 2013 season had little to do with action on the field—particularly the collegiate and pro games. First high school games—called “zero week” contests—score highest on the scale of legitimacy. Meanwhile, pro teams wind up meaningless exhibition games and many colleges open with “David and Goliath” contests.

Myth 1: “I don’t have enough time to be physically active.” Physical activity does take time, but there are ways to make it doable. If you don’t have 30 minutes in your daily schedule for an activity break, try to find three 10-minute periods. While on your lunch break, walk with a coworker around the building for 10 to 15 minutes.

Dear Gerry Gamel, As a senior at Mason High School, I understand the increasing importance of college hours and attending college itself. Texas weather never fails to confuse, confound and contradict! For several years, we've been dealing with and ongoing, and increasingly stubborn, drought. This past summer, we watched what little water remained in the stock tanks slowly evaporate, and what little grass had come last spring turned brittle and brown. Ranchers have been making tough decisions about how many cattle pastures can support, and how many cows need to go to sale.
