Let me say from the start that this is not a typical “Practical Baker” project. Lots of steps, lots of ingredients, bunches of dirty dishes and utensils, lots of time invested by the baker. But the results are, in my opinion, worth the time and effort. It is also worthwhile to note that some other folks in our little town have tried sample of this Pumpkin Bread, and they agree with me: it’s the best they’ve ever tried! Ingredients: For the topping: 5 tablespoons packed light brown su ...

It was a big day of “Changing!” Time to change the clocks. Time to change the air conditioner filter. Time to change the filter on the water purifier. Time to change the filter in my Keurig coffee maker. And, yes, even time to change the toilet paper. I can truly say, “I’m all tuckered out over all the changes.” All changes were not all that simple.

Six o’clock. But it’s really seven o’clock. Or is it? Whatever it is, it messes us up. They call it Daylight Savings Time. DST. Which just ended. By decree. What a racket. What a joke. To think one can actually save daylight. And now it’s given back to us… As we turn our clocks back. We gain an hour, they say. That’s darn near impossible. We just mess with our clocks. Like the Time Tyrants mess with us. Well, my 100-year-old, seven-day wind-up, Seth Thomas clock ...

The press has done a very good job of reporting about the challenges our veterans face.  We all have read or seen stories about our wounded warriors.  About traumatic brain injury.  About veterans suffering from depression and other serious mental health issues. About those who have lost limbs or endure other physical hardships.  These are serious issues that deserve our attention, especially on Veterans Day.  What also deserves our attention, but which gets much less press, is the fact ...

Dear Gerry: During our game against Bracketville on Friday night I became dizzy and somewhat disoriented. At halftime I tried to stand and could not. Many people were helpful and concerned for my welfare, especially when I had to lean against my husband to be able to stand upright without falling. Some of those people I know, but there are some whose names I don’t know.
