Pouring rain and cold weather did not prevent the Mason faithful from traveling to Leander last Friday for the playoff matchup between Mason and Shiner. It would be a tough night for the Punchers as they ended their 2013 season with a 13-14 loss to the Comanches. During the first quarter, both teams had to deal with temperatures hovering at the freezing mark, while pouring rains and occasional sleet pelted the field.

Hill Country Telephone Cooperative, Inc. (Hill Country) recently presented a $5,000 donation to the Mason Rodeo Association. “With its ranching and agricultural based local economy, rodeo is an important part of life for people living in the rural community of Mason, Texas. At Hill Country we are dedicated to promoting rural communities wherever we can and are excited to be part of this great program”, according to Delbert Wilson, CEO of Hill Country.

Come one, come all! On Saturday, November 30th, Mason County will begin celebrating the Christmas season with Alpha Beta Psi’s annual “Light Up Our Town” festivities. The fun will begin at the courthouse, and will end with the illuminating of the Christmas lights around our beautiful town square. Come early and enjoy some hot cocoa and delicious cookies with friends.

Sheri Jordan's Pre-K classes at Mason I.S.D. have been studying communities and community helpers. On Thursday, November 21, they visited the Court House (courtroom) to meet the County Judge and the County Sheriff, then they went to Mason Bank to meet the helpers there. After that, they boarded the bus to take a slow drive around the square to look at all the stores in the community that are there.

The Mason Lions club met Tuesday, November 19th, for its regular weekly luncheon meeting. Among the visitors were two Mason High School seniors, Dakota Lee and Bailee Everett. Lion Brent Hinckley was responsible for the program and introduced John Davis who spoke about the firs, and last, rocket batter of the Confederate States of American.

This week is Thanksgiving, and I must admit that this is one of my favorite times of year and a time each year to remember all of the blessings we each have. Living in Mason is always something to be thankful for and we as a community have so many things to remember and appreciate.

Happy Thanksgiving to all. Thank God for all that He has done. Prayers work. Art Choir practice will be at 6:30 pm every Wednesday. We are practicing for the community wide Advent worship service on December 1st at St Paul Lutheran Church, at 6 p.m. If you can breathe, you can be in this choir! A group of folks gathers each Tuesday at the Food Bank prayer room about 3 pm, to pray for our community.

Friday evening, November 22nd, in Leander Texas, a very good Mason Puncher football team lost a heartbreaker, 14 to 13, to an equally good team from Shiner. The game was played in conditions that could only be described as miserable. The first half was played in intermittent driving rain and the temperature was just above freezing throughout.

During my Sunday school class last week, I asked the kids what they would give thanks for this year. All of them, with very little prompting, said that they would have to be thankful for everything in their lives. I was pleasantly surprised that the kids with younger siblings even admitted that they were thankful for their little brothers and sisters.

Carol is training to work the front desk, substitute for staff members when they must be absent, and perform other library responsibilities. The Mason County Bluebonnet Study Club met on Monday, November 18, 2013 at 10 a.m. at the Mason County M. Beven Eckert Memorial Library, Stribling Room. Clyde Martin with the Mason Volunteer Fire Department gave an excellent program describing and demonstrating the types of equipment that the volunteer firemen use in their line of duty.

The Mason Garden Club met November 19th at the Mason County Library. The guest speaker was Dewey Eckert, a Mason Native, who spoke on “Growing and Saving Wildflower Seeds”. Dewey and his wife, Mary, have grown wildflower seeds commercially for years. Mary is also a member of the Mason Garden Club.

On November 21, two Mason County 4-H teams competed in the 2013 District 7 Food Challenge in Abilene, Texas. Teams were given certain cooking ingredients and allowed 40 minutes to prepare a dish from scratch and without any recipe. Upon completion of the entree, each team gave a brief presentation of what they had prepared.

Operation Orphans, Inc. in Mason, Texas hosted 44 boys from 10 child care and foster homes Friday and Saturday, November 8th and 9th. The boys hunted on 14 area ranches and harvested 46 animals. William Willmann, of Mason, passed away on Saturday, November 23, at the age of 81. Mr. Willmann is survived by his daughter Sarah Stahl and husband Ken, of Mason, and two sisters Etta Marie Mutschink of Art and Mildred Todd of LaGrange. He was preceded in death by his wife Jo Ann in 2007.
