I've heard that there are one or two families of German descent living in the Mason area, so when I came upon this recipe, I thought it might fit rather nicely. First of all, though, I understand that is really a Dutch, rather than German recipe. Secondly, it is NOT the typical Practical Baker recipe.

There seems to be a resurgence of interest in bowhunting lately, judging by comments I’ve been hearing. For instance, a few days ago I was in a convenience store, and I heard a guy in line in front of me tell his friend, “There seems to be a resurgence of interest in bowhunting lately.” Or maybe it was me that said it.

I had forgotten the joy of the “Turkey.” Yes, the Wish Bone, aka the Pulley Bone. I always like the piece of the chicken with the pulley bone in it. During the drought of the fifties, my folks raised rabbits. They told me that it was chicken when we had fried rabbit.

Parties, family dinners, and other gatherings where food is served are all part of the holiday cheer. But the merriment can change to misery if food makes you or others ill. Typical symptoms of foodborne illness are vomiting, diarrhea, and flu-like symptoms, which can start anywhere from hours to days after contaminated food or drinks are consumed. The symptoms usually are not long-lasting in healthy people—a few hours or a few days—and usually go away without medical treatment.

Olive Leaf is one of my favorite herbs for this time of year. I use olive leaf for immune enhancement so that I do not get the flu. However, olive leaf is more than just a great anti-viral. Olives in some form have been used throughout history. Olives and olive oil are referenced throughout the Bible.

He was, almost certainly, a young man whose name we’ll never know. Perhaps age 10, he was nondescript, like a background figure in a Charlie Brown comic strip. He sought not to make a name for himself, but rather to help out--not “paying it forward,” but “paying it up and down.” My wife and I, among the 3,100 guests disembarking from the week-long maiden voyage of Carnival Cruise Lines’ Carnival Sunshine, were back in New Orleans.

I would like to take the opportunity to thank our 2013 Puncher footballers. I had the most marvelous time watching the Punchers work their way through their season. You guys are, in my opinion, the heart beat of Mason. I feel particularly lucky that we have great coaches. The band, the cheerleaders, trainers, ball boys; what a fantastic aura all of yall bring about.

I read a great editorial on CNN.com this morning that discussed the problem with our current minimum wage. It's important to note at the outset that the editorial was co-written by the president of the AFL-CIO and the executive director of an advocacy group for lower-wage workers; but, it doesn't lessen the validity of the points made by the authors. They point out that all the wage increases in the past 15 years have gone to the wealthiest 10%.
