The Christmas season is a time of peace on earth and goodwill toward men. Or so I’ve been told. I guess women are on their own, but that’s not my fault. I didn’t make up the peace on earth thing, although I understand AlGore has made a pretty convincing claim. You would think, then, that we would be able to get along with one another at this time of year.

“Cabin Fever?” No, but I do have a bad case of the held in the house jitters! However, with Texas weather, it’ll get better! Just give it a few days and the sun will be shinning! To those who use or frequent a “Bed and Breakfast,” here are some items to strongly consider.

Stress – It’s what most of us have too much of. Coping with day to day tasks and problems can sometimes be overwhelming – especially during the holiday season. Being calm, relaxed and well rested helps almost everyone be less stressed. I like to look at basic nutrition to help with stress because I find that most people are deficient in basic nutrients.

Winter does not start for ten more days but the arctic cold has already come and the past several days have definitely felt like winter in Texas. I hope you are staying warm and dry and so far I have not heard of any problems with the state-wide electric system, although we have found that more power gets used in extremely cold weather than does in the very hottest of the summer.

In his play, As You Like It, debuted some 410 years ago, Will Shakespeare said “all the world’s a stage.” We can only guess whether theatre audiences nodded in agreement or shook their heads vigorously to object. Most of them likely were ambivalent, much like “players” on the world’s stage today, when we face more issues than anyone cares to count. So let us consider an addendum to his quote: “and cameras as well as microphones.”… ***** We, the populace, may whimper, prot ...

Now that we have the cotton ginning taken care of, we will continue tracking the growth of Erna as a center and as I mentioned in an earlier article, Erna was the hub for travel from the Mason area, as a branch went to London, one branch went to a cut in the hill west-southwest of Erna to an intersection with a wagon road from London to Menard, one branch went up Leon creek and Muskhog bottom on to Hext and one branch went north-north east across to 10 Mile and on to Brady.

“Rural life is lived mostly in the country.” Yep. That’s a direct quote from Anguished English. Edited by Richard Lederer (a stoic high school English teacher). What a book of gems. Culled from student papers written over the past few decades. Such as this one: “The human is more intelligent than the beast because the human brain has more convulsions.” In-te-res-ting. It’s not every day a book gives us a good laugh. We’re forever grateful. No one could make this stuff ...

This letter is in response to the editorial published in the December 4, 2013 issue regarding wages at fast food restaurants. First, fast food wages are not meant to be a "living wage" to support a family. Fast food jobs were never intended to be long term jobs. They are supposed to be the jobs you get when you are in high school or college while you are getting an education so you will have the skills for "full employment"

Gerry - Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, was born in Bethlehem. No one knows the exact date on which He was born, because the recording of so-called "birthdays" is a pagan practice. The Gospel of Luke says the shepherds were still in the fields, so in reality Jesus was not born in winter.
