This paper’s Christmas edition is December 24th and it will contain a Texas size “Community Greeting Card” that has an alphabetical listing of all contributors. This is yet another “non-Practical” recipe from America's Test Kitchen. Kinda fussy, a bit more time consuming than I like, and you do have to dirty up half the kitchen to pull them off, but it, like all the recipes I get from ATK, turns out a really good product, and for special occasions or for special people in your life, they're well worth the time and effort. Ingredients: 2 ¼ cups unbleached, all purpose flour ½ teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon baking powder ½ teaspoon salt 1

People sometimes ask me where I get ideas for my columns. People who know me personally are more curious than others, since they know I have a hard time coming up with a grocery list on my own. I’ve been writing a weekly outdoor humor column for 16 years, and I ran out of material 15 years ago.

Santa, you’ve asked me on several occasions, “What do you want for Christmas?” In the past I’ve dropped hints. Then on other occasions, I’ve told you. Both, were spoken to Elf ears! I don’t need anything. If I do, I usually get it myself. In fact what I would like can’t be bought, much less gift wrapped.

With Christmas approaching, many parents are planning to give their child a new bicycle – maybe even their first bicycle. This is an excellent opportunity to teach children about the importance of wearing a helmet to protect their head. According to National Safe Kids, helmets can reduce the risk of severe brain injury by up to 88%, but only 45% of children wear bike helmets.

Just a week more to complete all of the preparations for Christmas of 2013, and a week after that and we will all be wondering where the past year went and trying to remember to date papers and checks for 2014! Even in the midst of all of the activity and excitement of the Christmas season, I try to stop and see the entire holiday time as a complete season of blessings and celebration.

Acidophilus and other probiotics are familiar to many. Probiotics are the healthy bacteria that inhabit our gut. The average healthy person has 4-5 pounds of these critters in their intestinal tract. The word “probiotic” means “for life”. Probiotics have several functions that enhance our lives and are essential to good health.

Year’s end often leads us to reflect back over the last twelve months with an analytical eye. We celebrate our achievements and hopefully learn from our miscues as we plan for the upcoming year. The generous financial support of the Mason community, the many, many hours of volunteer work performed by county residents, and a desire on the part of many to simply serve others, have all combined to give the Mason Food Bank much to celebrate at year’s end. Gone are the days when the Mason Food ...

When life is rough, PRAY. When life is great, PRAY. At this time of the year, we all seem to be full of joy and energy. It may be the cold weather because we are trying to get warm so we try to snuggle with our friends. But let us not forget the reason for the season.

For the longest time, Americans by the millions were pampered and charmed by airlines in general. One ad urged us to “fly the friendly skies.” And we did, with pleasure. The horrific 9-11 tragedy changed everything. Suffice it to say that folks who formerly chose to fly when facing trips of 150 miles or more have upped the number greatly, say to a minimum of 300 miles…. ***** Facing a 600-mile trip to New Orleans recently for the inaugural cruise of the Carnival Sunshine, we chose to ...

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas. Especially last week. What a frosty white world. And colder than a well digger’s….. Well, anyway… Cold. How cold was it? It was sooooo cold… They played ice hockey on the streets in Dallas. And now they’re saying another one’s comin.’ Like, end of the week. But weather is weather. And it changes all the time. Maybe “they” will be wrong. If it’s this cold now, think of February. No, forget that. Think of how hot w ...

Clement Moore had very limited vision. In his poetic holiday tribute, all attention is focused on "The Night Before Christmas," as if that limited time period could encompass all the emotions of the holiday. But, Christmas is so very much more. For folks such as me, Christmas shopping still has to be done.

Thank you for donating to the Mason County Child Welfare Board in the past years and for donating again this year. I also want to thank the members of the Welfare Board for all their hard work on the fundraiser they hold each year. I am a junior at Mason High School, and I am taking twelve hours of dual credit this year.

My name is Leaird McClellan, and I am a senior at Mason ISD. I am taking three dual credit classes that have been paid for by donations and fund raisers for the Mason Country Child Welfare program. I am extremely grateful for the money paid for the classes I am taking because my tuition total was around 600 dollars. And although I worked last summer hauling hay, I am trying to save money for when I go away to college.

I would like to give my thanks to the Mason County Child Welfare Board Tuition Assistance Program. Last year, paying for my class wasn’t too hard to deal with. This summer, I worked on a ranch and tried to make ends meet. This year, however, I am taking more classes and my brother is also now taking classes.

I am writing in response to Gerry’s Dec 4 editorial about minimum wage. The point Gerry made sounds great if you don’t take the economic factors into account. The first and most basic rule of economics is the law of supply and demand. If the price of an item goes up, then the demand for the item goes down.

I am sorry this response is so late. The passing of Bill Willmann took me by surprise. He looked good for a man of 81 years. I knew him from the Senior Center here in Mason. Sometimes I would stay after lunch & listen to Bill talk about his experiences farming up in the panhandle.

Dear Gerry, Merry Christmas! I just finished watching one of Hollywood’s Christmas classics, The Bishop’s Wife, and I can’t imagine where my brain flew off to the first two or twenty times I saw it! The last thirty seconds of that little black-and-white movie present, to me, the best Christmas sermon ever delivered.

The Walk 2B Fit group had a Christmas Lunch after class on Monday, December 16th. This class, led by Ann Scarth at the First United Methodist Church, has become friends as they “walk” three miles to various DVD’s. The talk level is frequently louder than the music on the DVD but the excercise is still beneficial as each person can walk in place, kick, side step and work arms at their individual pace.
