During the first meeting of the Mason County Commissioners' Court for 2014, the group heard from a representative of PennzSuppress, an Austin company that was conducting a road test the next day on McCulloch County Road 216 (the northern end of what begins in Mason County as Old Voca Road). The reason that particular road was chosen for testing is that it handles a large volume of traffic from sand trucks traveling to and from three different plant sites in the Voca area.

The Youth Group of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church (Mason, TX) has created a display of 56 white crosses on the church lawn. Each cross represents one million unborn children who have been aborted. This means that over 56 million (56,000,000 plus) unborn children have been aborted since 1973. That number represents that one baby every 20 seconds has been aborted. The newly published book, "Ambassadors of The Aggie Spirit, The History of the Texas A&M Yell Leaders," has a connection to Mason's own Tommy Splittgerber, himself a former yell leader. Standing at the kitchen sink Sunday afternoon, watching the sun sink toward the horizon, I told my wife, “Well, there goes the season.” Actually, the window over the sink in our kitchen faces east, but I was feeling symbolic, and I do that better at a sink, for some reason. The 2013-14 Texas deer season was the best I’ve ever had, full of firsts and lasts, and was the most enjoyable of my life, to date.

Z and I talk to the people on the television set. It seems they need our input on the subjects at hand. It doesn’t hurt their feelings and it does our mental health some good. I don’t like it when the weather man says, “It’s going to be cooler in the morning.” No, it’s not going to be cooler, dude, it’s going to be COLDER.

In last week’s paper I mentioned the Public Meeting that is scheduled for Thursday, January 30 at 5:30 in the evening at the Eckert Civic Center to discuss the plans with City officials and TxDOT representatives for bridge replacements in the City of Mason. There are several different projects involved but all of them have been under discussion for several years now and it is looking like there may be some completion in the coming year.

It takes an excess of about 3,500 calories to gain a pound. Break that into smaller bites and 100 extra calories a day can put on about 10 pounds a year. The GOOD NEWS is LOSING 10 pounds can be as easy as eating 100 calories LESS each day for a year.

Health tends to be greatly misunderstood. Either that or most people do not think of health like I do. One of the first ways that people think when they want to restore health is allopathically. Allopathic means that a disease or condition is treated with a substance that causes the opposite effect of the symptoms – as in modern conventional medicine..

Goldilocks didn’t realize it at the time, of course, but she had it comparatively easy--lucky beyond measure-- to find the “just right” bed on the third try. Within mere seconds of trying out The Three Bears’ beds, she nestled comfortably, thinking—albeit erroneously—that all was right with her world. Today we are challenged by dozens of eye-crossing choices offered by many firms, some with big ads proclaiming whatever day it is to be the best day ever to purchase a new mattress. ...

Lately, I've been experimenting with a new cookbook. That means that I've been cooking up new recipes, and that means that I've been doing some additional grocery shopping recently. As anyone who does the grocery shopping for their family already knows, food costs are an ever increasing part of the family budget. In Mason County, there are a number of projects that work in tandem to help combat the problems of high food costs, nutritional deficiencies and lack of food availability.
