The Odeon Preservation Association and the Odeon Theater announces a special appearance and concert by one of country music’s top award winning performers. Kix Brooks will perform at the Odeon Theater in Mason, Texas Saturday March 8, 2014. Kix Brooks got into music at a young age which eventually lead him to Nashville where he started his career writing hit songs for the other artists such as the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Highway 101, and John Conley.

Cowgirls claim district title, advance to area. The Mason Cowgirls claimed the district championship title in last week’s win over the Junction Lady Eagles. They earned a bye the first round and will play the area round playoff game on Thursday, February 13 at the new Liberty Hill High School gym, tipping off at 7:00 pm.

Since mid-January when the Mason County Commissioners' Court and the City of Mason Commission both gave their blessings to a plan by the Puncher Club to build a new field house, work has progressed rapidly. Volunteers have already removed the old field house, and the Mason County Road Department has hauled away the building debris, as well as bringing in soil for the foundation of the new building.

Come join us for the second annual Valentine’s Date Night at the Odeon Theater. The cost is $24 which includes 2 admission tickets, 2 drinks and 1 medium popcorn. Tickets may be purchased at the door. Proceeds from the movie night will benefit the Odeon Theater and help 20 high school students attend Young Life camp in June 2014.

The Mason Head Start wants to thank our Headstart parents, Ray Avalos, Patty Allen, and the Mason Recycling center for helping us learn about recycling this past week. Mr. Ray came to our center and spoke to us about keeping our Earth clean and how to recycle, he spoke about how the landfill works.

The Mason Lions club met Tuesday, February 4th, for its monthly business meeting. There were 35 members and two visitors in attendance. Among the visitors were two Mason High School seniors, Price Ruffin and Zac Davidson. "Boss Lion" Fritz Landers was responsible for the program and Secretary/Treasurer Gene Gammill read the minutes and gave the financial report.

My trip to Bastrop was extended due to the cold weather. I did okay, as long as I had one of the kids with me. However, I had problems finding my way back to the house without them. Living in a city has it’s perks, but give me the Hill Country!

This past week there were a couple of meetings that will have a positive impact on our town and provide some new benefits to our residents. John Palacio and I met with representatives of Hill Country Telephone and their contractors concerning their project to provide fiber optic internet access to all of the City of Mason.

The library now has some tax forms for copying. We no longer receive full sets of books and forms. Copies are only 15¢ for black-and-white per page. FAX is $1.00 per page. We had a new author drop by last week—Charles Dee Smith from Llano. He generously donated two audiobooks in the Bud and Bunny audiobook series.

One of the things I've always loved about living in central Texas is that we truly have four seasons. Some of them may only last for a few days while others last for eight months; but, we have all four seasons: spring, summer, fall and winter. Summer is our predominant season.

In observance of National Cardiac Rehabilitation Week, Feb. 9-15, 2014, the Cardiac Rehabilitation Center at Hill Country Memorial Hospital marks its 23rd year of service to the community. What began as a cardiac patient education program in the late 1980s grew to become a dedicated cardiac rehabilitation program in 1991 under the guidance of Patsy Glasscock, RN-BC.

Mason, Texas – Residents living in and around the Mason, Texas community can be screened to reduce their risk of having a stroke or bone fracture. First Baptist Church will host Life Line Screening on 3/11/2014. The site is located at 325 E College Ave in Mason. Heino Erichsen from The Woodlands, TX, participated in a Life Line Screening event in January of 2009 and learned that he had an abdominal aortic aneurysm and a blockage in his carotid artery.

The Mason Puncher Basketball Team is in the playoffs with a big win over Nueces Canyon. The Punchers will start their playoff run next week as either the 2nd place team or 3rd place team depending upon the outcome of the Harper game. The playoffs start next week for the boys and more information will be sent out when they find out when and where they play.

Civil Air Patrol, the volunteer civilian auxiliary of the United States Air Force, is recruiting members for the Cadet program in Fredericksburg.  The Fredericksburg Cadet Squadron started in October 2005, and another Basic Cadet Training class is now forming. Sheri Wheeler, daughter of Craig and Patti Grote and granddaughter of Stanley Grote, has been named the featured Artist of the Month at the Mason Co. M. Beven Eckert Memorial Library for February. Sheri says that her earliest memory of drawing and sketching was in kindergarten. Instead of just drawing the letter the teacher told them to do, she drew the letter plus the little picture that went with it.

On December 3rd, the CTEC Operation Round-Up Board of Directors approved 5 grant applications. One grant was awarded to victims of a recent house fire – the Jerrod Masters family in Mountain Home, Texas. This young family of four lost the entire contents of their home, but luckily there were no physical injuries.

FORT WORTH, TEXAS - ASPEN MARTIN, a 4-H member from MASON COUNTY, exhibited the RESERVE CHAMPION HAIR SHEEP in the Junior WETHER LAMB Show at the 2014 Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo on FEBRUARY 2. This past Saturday, kids from Mason High School and Junior High performed at the Region Solo & Ensemble contest which was held at Howard Payne University in Brownwood. Four high school kids performed piano solos. Kendra Klaerner and Levi Hoffman each performed a class 2 piano solo and both received a 1st division.

Frank A. Hernandez, of Mason, went to his eternal home Tuesday, February 4, 2014. He was 73 years young. Frank was born January 4, 1941, in Katemcy to Anselmo J. Hernandez and Bersabe A. Ramos. He married Paula Cantu on August 21, 1965. He was a hard-working man who cared for his family diligently and with all devotion.

This Friday will begin the first of three weeks of high school tennis matches to be hosted by Mason. The Puncher Shootout will again attract a solid field of tennis teams. The tournament will guarantee each player four quality matches. This year the schools that will be participating will be Abilene High, Fredericksburg, Junction, Kerrville, Marble Falls, Midland Christian, San Angelo Central, and Mason.
