Sunday morning, my wife looked out the kitchen window and said, “There’s a squirrel in the back yard, if you want to practice.” Unfortunately I didn’t have a Gamo Whisper Fusion Pro air rifle handy to shoot the squirrel with, so I had to pass. Shooting the squirrel with anything else would have produced a dead squirrel, but would not have been the kind of practice my wife was talking about.

It takes great effort on my part to have a clean car. When I do get it cleaned up, washed and vacuumed, I want it to stay that way. At least for thirty-five hours! However, the birds have a personal agenda for clean washed cars. Yep, they have a contest on who can dump on the exact parts of the windows, doors, hood and truck.

With my last article, we wrote the end of Erna as a trade center about 1946 when it all shut down about the same time and everyone went their ways at the end of WW2. The highway system was in progress as the highway was changed and paved in 1943 and this eliminated the bogs and sand beds and most of all, the nails and staples causing a flat tire every trip one made and we all missed the rub board road of the past.. The original highway designation for the road when the state took control was H ...

So far as I know, none of my elementary schoolmates made it to the Metropolitan Opera—unless as a member of the audience, usher staff or clean-up crew. On balance, our highest musical aspirations might have justified our inclusion in church choirs, but without expectation to be chosen for solos. When Christmas pageant time rolled around, we risked minimal embarrassment by shooting for silent roles—perhaps as shepherds. Donning masquerades as camels might best have fit our ability—front ...

Primrose. Flower of February. And a powerful flower at that. If we have less than 13 primroses in our first spring posy, our hens will have less than 13 chicks. That’s one belief. So if you make that posy a big ‘un, you’ll be in the chicken business. Posy. Now there’s a word you don’t come across every day. And a primrose posy is about as common as hen’s teeth too. But much prettier. The Welsh traditionally believed it was bad luck for a primrose to flower before June.

Mason County residents are blessed with long lives. During those lives, which are very blessed with adventures and activities that make those lives full and happy, the folks are able to amass a lifetime of memories. Those same people have worked at their jobs for a lifetime. They have saved and scrimped and invested and squirreled away money, all so that in those later years, they would have enough income to enjoy their golden years in a manner to which they've become accustomed.
