Rene Descartes (pronounced ‘Descartes’) used to be a Frenchman, back during the 17th century. I say ‘used to be’ because Descartes is currently deceased. But before he shuffled off his mortal coil, Descartes said some things people still say today, sometimes, when they want to sound philosophical or well-read. For some reason. One of the things Descartes said was ‘Cogito ergo sum,’ which is French for ‘supersize it.’ Just kidding.

During a recent “DDD” airing, the chef whipped up a batch of Cheddar Cheese biscuits. They looked great, and we decided to try to either find the recipe on the internet, or recreate it from what we remembered seeing. We had no luck on the internet, so what I’m presenting here is our best guess, plus what I learned from making several experimental batchs of these little fellers.

Water retention bogs down many of us and is often a symptom of other health problems. Water balance within our bodies depends on many factors. Poor kidney function will cause excess fluid to build up in the body. There are many herbs that act as diuretics while also being nutritive to the kidney and strengthening it over time.

It seems as though every time I turn around there is something new that needs attention or needs to be worked into the regular operations of the City. Some of those new issues are generated by state or federal agencies that are trying to find ways to “make everyone equal” and homogenize our society without sometimes realizing the actual differences each person or community has.

The stillest water at greatest depth has much in common with a recent retiree at Sul Ross State University in Alpine. Dr. Chet Sample also runs deep, having provided exemplary leadership that encouraged scholarship ahead of intercollegiate athletics. That said, he’s as rare as a spotless leopard, helping students focus first on the goal of college graduation, then on athletics.

Platyhelminth. Almost sounds like someone’s name. “Hi, I’m Platy Helminth. Wanna play?” Alas. Platyhelminth is a type of worm. So says Trusty Webster. But not just any worm. This one has bilateral symmetry. Kinda like what weightlifters aspire to. Well…maybe that’s bicep symmetry. Platyhelminth also has a soft, solid, flattened body. Kinda like what most people exercise for. And yet, here’s this worm. And it does nothing to get in shape. Or stay in shape. Because ...

When I was growing up, I was fortunate enough to take art lessons from Ramona Kelso. I remember Aunt Bert McLemore dropping me off at Ramona's studio, and for the next hour, I learned about shading, perspective, color and composition. Ramona was infinitely patient, had a wicked sense of humor, and genuinely loved helping others discover their own artistic talents. My exposure to art in Mason at that time was pretty much limited to Winchester and Remington, with the occasional bluebonnet landsc ...
