Last Wednesday, April 23, 2014, four admirable high school juniors were inducted into the Mason Chapter of the National Honor Society. Luis Castillo, Paris Jones, James Perlichek, and Katy Smith were presented to the public and pinned with an NHS sealed broach by their parents. Mason Artisan Gallery is an eclectic collection of the work of artists and artisans from the Mason area. Paintings in oil, acrylic, and watercolor line the walls and tables, which also hold jewelry made by local craftsmen, collages, three dimensional pieces, decorated gourds, wooden chests, clocks, and cards. The work of Jan Keller will be highlighted during the month of May.

Grand View Outdoors is, as far as you know, an outdoor news agency out of Birmingham, Alabama. I must’ve signed up for their news feed at one time or another, so I get emails from them two or three times a week. The emails contain links to news items related to outdoor issues, and sometimes they’re very helpful.

“LISTS!” I make lists when I go shopping. These lists are made with items that are from where I enter the store until I go to the check out. I don’t appreciate stores changing up the items on the isles. This really can throw me off. Of course, when this happens I always find items that are not on my list.

The Mason Lions club met Tuesday, April 22nd, for its regular weekly meeting. There were 32 members and ten visitors in attendance. Lion Glenn Ruthven was responsible for the program and introduced Jan Appleby, Marnelle Ruthven, Scott Zesch and Don Daniels who represented the Mason County Historical Commission. Scott gave some information and presented a slide show on the Seaquist House.

Dear Gery, The United States no longer qualifies as a democracy. That’s the conclusion reached by a study sponsored by Princeton University and published this month. Instead, the United States political system now conforms to the standards of an oligarchy, rule by a few wealthy, powerful people or corporations. Actually, the Princeton study merely confirms what surely everyone has been experiencing for decades.

The 10th Annual Lamplight Designs Art Competition and Exhibition will open as a part of the First Friday Art Walk this week at Topaz Confections Bakery. Mason High School art students will be exhibiting works reflecting a range of medium including painting, drawing, and mixed media. The exhibition will be on display for one week with an opening reception on Friday, May 2 from 5:30-6:30.

The MISD Board of Trustees and Facilities Task Force will be holding a meeting on Thursday, May 8th at 6:00 p.m. to share information regarding the plans for the new classroom wing. Preparation for construction has already begun and will continue through the summer. Actual construction is expected to begin in September.

(TEMPLE, TX—April 28) Soil and water conservation districts in State District Two will elect a member to the Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board (TSSWCB) on Tuesday, May 6. The election will be held at 6 p.m. in Wall, TX in the Saint Ambrose Catholic Church Parish Hall Conference Room. State District Two consists of 51 counties within which there are 45 soil and water conservation districts in the Hill Country and Big Bend-Trans Pecos region of Texas.

Chef” Martha Kothmann is a star! Her Nonnie’s Kitchen classes, part of the Mason Co. M. Beven Eckert Memorial Library’s Makerspaces programming, have been a tremendous hit this spring. Her third class on April 25 featured Italian food, and the tantalizing aromas from the kitchen are the best advertising she could do!

Alexandria Martinez will earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Sam Houston State University during their May 9, 2014, commencement exercises. Swanna Suits Hornstein, born August 10, 1918, died January 30, 2014, in Navarre, Florida, after a lengthy illness. She was predeceased by her husband, Sheppard Yale Hornstein, on April 22, 2005. She is survived by her daughter, Lenore Newsom, son-in-law Tommy, and grandson Jake Newsom. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, May 4th, at 2:00 PM at the Newsom home, 810 Hofmann St.

At Area contest on April 12, 2014, critic judge Marc Pickell praised and encouraged the cast and crew after watching Mason High School’s performance of scenes from “The Last Night of Ballyhoo.” He loved the “world of the play“ they created, the effective pacing and the balance between humor and drama that the company achieved.

On April 16th several Mason Punchers and Cowgirls participated in the Best of the West Special Olympics in Sonora. Our team brought home eight medals and lots of great memories! Thank you to the Sonora ISD for being such a wonderful host!

Jane Lakin is the newest volunteer at the Mason Co. M. Beven Eckert Memorial Library. Jane shelves books and materials on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. Jane has loved libraries since she was a young girl. One reason she enjoys working here now is that in high school she worked in a library after school.

The Mason Community Foundation (MCF) recently presented two more grants. For one of the grants, money went to the City of Mason and that photo was in last week's paper. Child Protective Services (CPS) investigated more than 160,000 allegations of child abuse or neglect in Texas last year. 156 children died at the hands of their parents or other caregivers, 66,398 were victims of abuse or neglect, and more than 17,000 had to be removed from their homes for their own protection.

Paul Edward Gips passed away April 8, 2014, days short of his 93rd birthday. He was born in Yorktown in 1921 to Paul F. Gips and Antonette Mollenhauer Gips. He graduated from Yorktown High School in 1939, then attended Texas Lutheran Junior College. He was starting tailback in football for two years, and starting guard for two years on the basketball team.

The Mason Tennis Association Tennis-A-Thon fundraiser was a smashing success in raising over $8100. The money will be used to improve our tennis center. Many of our tennis playing youth, ages 3 to 18, played tennis for 1 and 1/2 hours on March 23rd and acquired sponsors who donated money to them for playing. The top fundraiser for this event was Madelyn Heath, a 6th grader, who raised $850.
