Those of you who remember any facts from American History class (1975-76, Coach Burns) are likely to recall that the American Uncivil War was fought from 1861-1865. It was a dark time in our history, and many can still trace their ancestry and prove they had relatives who fought on both sides during the War of Northern Aggression. When the war ended, former slaves went to a Confederate prisoner-of-war camp and dug up 257 Union soldiers, and then reburied them with honors.

Back in 1980, when I started writing “Down the Drain With Jane,” I chose the title due to Fred Meredith, who wrote a Colum by the title of, “UP THE CREEK!” Looking at this date I would have to have the title of “INDOORS!” Too, this wouldn’t have been as catchy as DOWN THE DRAIN!

Feeling better and being healthy is something we all want and work on. There are natural ways to help everyone. One of the priorities to address nutritional deficiencies. Everyone is deficient in something. Most people are low on basic minerals and vitamins as it is impossible to get all the nutrients you need from food - even if you are eating a balanced diet - which most of us aren’t. I find that most people need supplemental B vitamins for calm energy and for stress reduction.

When you come by the library this week, you’ll notice that all the bluebonnets that had gone to seed in the flowerbeds are gone. Well, we can all thank Garden Club member Christie Keller for pulling them all out for us and making our beds look beautiful again! I also want to thank Barbara Brunken, a member of our Library Board, for doing a special book review on the radio for Memorial Day.

When one of the nation’s most prestigious higher education institutions announces a policy change—however slight--it can produce near seismic results--in the eyes of beholders, anyway. “Beholding,” in this case, are faculty, students and alumni of Davidson College. Who knows what may break loose? Buildings may quake, forcing ivy to seek new places to climb.

“Purple as it comes, telling of a change In seasons…This kind of wisdom blooms On a Texas sage” (from a poem by yours truly titled Deep Soil) And Texas sage does tell it like it is. Spring is nearly over. Here comes summer. Purple is as purple does. The silvery-white bush bursts with color. And it’s doing it all over town. Take the Texas sage tour. For the last few years, I've found the graduation of the Mason High School seniors resonating more and more with my own life. The class of 2014 is the second graduating class that I've followed for their entire journey through the halls of Mason I.S.D. This year, there a number of the kids that I've been close to during their years in school, and they will be greatly missed. Our Mason County News intern, Jackie Drazan, will be difficult to replace.
