RONdom Thoughts

Quoth The Reverend Evermore
I am a quoter.
You can quote me on that.
As a speaker and writer I like to think of myself as clever and witty and wise. However, I must humbly admit that I am not the only one with these gifts. The past and present are filled with the thought provoking quotations of talented thinkers.
Reading these my reaction is, “I wish I'd said that.
Organic satire

Most people probably don’t realize how difficult it is to write satire these days. It used to be easy, back when people were mentally stable, for the most part, and could tell when you said something that was obviously meant as a joke. When I started writing this column, 26 years ago, I could say I’d met bigfoot while having coffee with Elvis, and no one would take me seriously.
When will this summer heat end? I am working on the highest water bill around this year. That is not for
a green lawn, but just to keep it crispy and not brown. The weatherman said we could have over 100
degree days through the third week of September. Pray for rain.
This was a hard week for our family.
Think about a volcano emerging from the surface of the ocean and forming a new island, new land. At first there is no life of any kind on the island. Eventually, however, after the lava has cooled, there may be some bacteria and fungi that begin to grow on the lava at the edge of the water, and these microorganisms begin a very long, slow process of breaking down the rock.

The observation of the natural world then links it to when to plant certain crops. For example, when Crocus, Forsythia, Daffodils and Dandelion bloom and when to plant peas, onions, lettuce, beets, Swiss chard, kale, and potatoes.
So far, I have seen Crocus, Forsythia, and even the beginnings o ...
I grew up in the Permian Basin between Lubbock and Midland. When I was ten-years-old I went to work for the farmer who raised cotton and grain next to our house. I have many fond memories, and some not-so-fond memories, of the six years I worked summers and weekends on that farm.
One of the memories I have is of the County Agent coming out, stepping off ten feet of a cotton row and counting boll worms in order to calculate whether or not it would pay to spray for the boll worms.

Spring is on its way. This is the time of the year that this gardener struggles with the cold, grey, barren garden. But today, as I was out in the morning, the large ash tree that has been on this property for many long seasons is budding. So far so good.
The Rhodes Freezer Dinner Rolls that you can find in the grocery store are very good, very handy, and just don't require much help from you, as the baker, to get some fresh rolls on the table. Being an old-fashioned baker-type person, I resist the temptation to use the store-bought rolls most of the time, and instead use this recipe.
